Not every trip turns out the way we expect it to. Discuss your worst travelling experiences!

Thank God every trip I've been on has been great! I never got ill or injured & I'm a planner anyway & will bring a manila envelope of maps, info, etc. that I've printed out, so fortunately everything's always came out rather smoothly so far. I guess the worse that's ever happened is getting a little lost at times, but that's almost expected when you're in an unfamiliar place.

I think the worst that's happened to me is when I flew from Hartford, CT, to Norfolk, VA, to visit my then fiance. The weather was bad and flights were delayed so much I missed my connecting flight in Philadelphia and had to sleep over in the airport overnight. Thank goodness there was a group of girls about my age that were in the same predicament so we could stick close together. I wouldn't have been able to sleep if I was totally on my own.

That was the last time I flew down - I thought it would be quicker, ha. It usually just took me 8-9 hours to drive so I did that from then on.

I guess spending 11 hours in LaGuardia during mainly the wee hours while enduring a 100 degree fever would rank as my worst travel experience. No one around, nothing open, no where to go, nothing to do, not even sleep.

There are so many I don't know where to start. Many happened when I was a kid. The engine exploded half way down the block the only time we managed to leave on time. Another time we got lost on the way to the campsite and somehow wound up parked on land that a herd of buffalo used as its sleeping gounds. Getting stuck in Minneapolis airport due to snow then on the plane one the tarmac for almost and hour on both sides of the flight because they did not have anyone to park or unpark the plane. Getting stuck in Ohare for 4 hours and being shuffled from one gate to another. We finally left 3 hours after we were supposed to have landed in the other city. Being trapped on a greyhound bus with a bunch of drunk college kids and a crazy guy that talked endlessly for 5 days...I could go on.

My worst was when I was out of the country. I was severely dehydrated, throwing up (what I don't know), and had an extremely high fever. It was late, no medication, and I had to fly out that night at 8 and would not arrive in the U.S until the next day. Luckily, I was with a group, and was able to make it back to the States. That was the longest flight I've ever been on! LOL!

Probably the only two times I have flown by myself I managed to get stuck in an airport overnight (once in Chicago and once in Detroit). At Chicago I got a hotel room and realized what a waste of money it was to sleep for only about four hours so at Detroit I just slept the best I could in the airport.

And the fact that with the Detroit trip they couldn't get me onto another flight until 7pm the next night and although I managed to get on stand-by to get on an earlier flight, but I had to pay $50 to get on that flight. Then I had to wait on the plane for over an hour before it took off (de-icing, then a check engine light came on so the plane had to be checked over, then they had to get more gas, then more de-icing before we finally took off) and I was next to a guy who complained about everything while at that point I just wanted peace and quiet and was trying not to let the whole situation bother me (as I was coming home for the holidays after being gone for about five months). So thankful this year I will already be home at holiday time and that I won't have to go through that stress again this year!

On the way home from Florida we had to take off late so we missed our connecting flight home. Sleeping in an airport is horrible. Everything closed down and the janitors were giving us dirty looks for putting together 2 chairs to sleep on!

My worst experience was when our kids were very young. My husband was not a citizen, and had to enter UK via a citizen gate. My girls and I had to enter via an alien gate. My husband hates flying so was doped up on tranquilizers and etc. He went one way, and I went another way with two screaming toddlers in tow. I did not know if I would ever see him again, as he could barely walk. But, it had a happy ending, we were united at the next waiting area.

My worst vacation experience was my weddingmoon in Jamaica. It rained the whole time and we had to take an escort to and from our suite. The TV went out, the phone broke, and the food wasn't great. I think a lot had to do with who I was on vacation with though. With my current husband and the same vacation it probably would have been wonderful!

Let's see...I spent my childhood traveling with my parents so there are a lot of stories...

-Was it the time in Cairo they kept us waiting and waiting and taking us to different planes - none the right ones - and finally telling us our plane had crashed on the way...I guess that comes under could have been the worst trip.

-Maybe it was the time I got separated from my parents at the Vatican on a Sunday the pope was appearing and wandered around afraid and alone for about 4 hours (I was 12).

-Or the time my parents decided to do a date night in Istanbul and left my sister and I in a guarded campground but didn't realize they raised the bridges at night and we were awake all night thinking they had been murdered in the bazarre because we had seen them cleaning up the blood from a murder that day.

    or...or...or

    I should write a book - lol!

I was traveling through Europe when I graduated college in 2001. My passport was stolen while I was sleeping in a hostel in Berlin. The American Consulate were not very helpful and I remember I started yelling at them. They refused to give me a passport b/c I had no money (stolen as well). I couldnt get money wired to me b/c I had no photo id. Well I convinced them after yelling to call my mother who gave her CC info to them. They took my last 20 dollars to pay for the passport pictures for my friend and I. They were AWFUL.
This was about a month and a half before 9/11.

I hate layovers. You know the one where the flight is full and they give you that ticket to a nearby hotel and food money. Surely its free but I have a schedule to keep here.

My husband and I got stuck in the Mexico City airport due to our plane arriving late from South America (hours late). The ticket agent said , just listen to the announcements to hear when your plane arrives. Yeah, sure. The are 3 gazillion (brazillian) people in that ariport, and they all seem to be talking and yelling at the same time. You couldn't hear a thing and when you could hear the announcements, barely, the person speaking had such a heavy Hispanic accent, you didn't know what they were saying anyway. It was awful. I was a nervous wreck that we would miss that flight. We didn't, but our luggage went to Texas-not Florida!

I've traveled quite a bit--all around the United States and Canada, to Europe, South America, and Central America. I've had many many experiences in which things did not go according to plan, or there was no plan, but all were memorable and turned out to be interesting.

I can't think of a single thing that I found to be a horrible experience...even climbing down off Mt. Ranier while 7 months pregnant in the middle of a snowstorm. Tiring, yes. But incredibly beautiful.

We once missed a connection in Manaus, Brazil and ended up staying there for an extra 3 days. There weren't many flights in or out back then. There wasn't a place in that city that we didn't explore.

Stuck in LaGuardia for about 8 hours. If you have been to LaGuardia, you know how cavelike it is. Imagine it packed wall to wall with pissed off people. I had two kids who kept climbing on the seats next to me. One fell off the seat and knocked my iced tea alllll over me. Then once we got on the plane, they were so backed up it took THREE hours to take off. And I was in a middle seat between a smelly man and woman who immediately began snoring.

HORRENDOUS. I will never go back to LaGuardia.

When I flew home for Easter/Spring Break 2 years ago. It was in the 80s here. So, I had on sandals, a t-shirt and jeans and threw my coat and shoes on the top of my checked bag. We got to Cleveland (my lay-over) and I am not sure if it was the gate I was on or what, but we had to walk down the steps and across the tarmac. It was in the middle of a blizzard (not kidding). So, I was freezing. I had to then walk back out and get on a teeny tiny plane taking me to Michigan. It had propellers on the side. So, when I got home, they could not put the plane next to the gate due to the propellers. So, I had to walk across another tarmac in another blizzard (still in a t-shirt and sandals- I did have a light sweater). Well, they lost my bag  So, I was in Michigan for 2 days with no close-toed shoes and no coat (not to mention any clothes!!). It was awful!
