We're approaching the end of the year & it's time to start thinking about what we'll do next year. If you know you're guaranteed back at your current place, that's great, but for others of you, what do you plan to do? I'm at this school in which it's my first year there. I despised it at the beginning & didn't know how much more I could take, but I learned to make the best of it, but it's far from great. I do LOVE the schedule I have there now, which is very hard to beat, but I'm going to see what I can find over the summer & if I can't find anything else to my liking, I might, might try to return there. If I don't return, no problem whatsoever! I've got other projects I'm working on.
I'm finishing up my second year teaching first grade at a charter school in southern CA, and I will be teaching fifth grade (most likely) at a charter school in northern CA next year! We are moving in July. I am totally thrilled. I got the job a week ago, and it's been such a relief. I love my current school, but I do not love my current area. I can't wait to move. Also, my new school seems really great. It was my first choice before they even posted any openings. They use a lot of technology, lots of project based learning, and the workshop model, which I completely love. I am VERY excited! :woot:
I'll be back at my same school, teaching, at this point, a split grade 7/8 class. I'm looking forward to a less stressful start to the school year--this year, the first time we stepped into the building was the Friday before school started!
I have tenure at my current school but am going to start looking for something closer to home. I drive an hour each way and the commute is starting to get to me. If I don't find anything closer, no problem. I love my current school and am happy to stay.
I will be staying at my school, and hopefully in my grade level. That being said I'm not really thrilled in the grade level I'm teaching, but I think it has a lot to do with the kids I have this year more than the actual grade level. I have a pretty tough class and the parents aren't much help.
I am still technically a sub, though had a 3-month maternity leave position that likely gained me a significant boost to the resume, letters of rec, and overall status. However, my confidence in myself is such that I have yet to decide that I want to start applying to districts this year... If I'm able to get myself over that hurdle, it'll be just applying to this and numerous other school districts after some initial changes to my resume and adding the letters...and lots of practice interviewing as I am horrible at them.
I am going to look for other jobs closer to home. If I don't find anything then I will be at my current school. I am desperate to find a school that has a lower work load. I have no textbooks, 1.5 hour classes and no prep period….. Great school with great kids, just too much work. While I know every teaching job takes a lot of work, I know another regular school could be a little less work.
I will be beginning my junior year of college. I will be doing more actual teaching in my fieldwork. I'm really excited for that.
I will be moving back to the US in July and am applying in every county near Atlanta, Asheville, and Raleigh/Durham. Plan B is to find a substitution or pre-k position in one of these cities, and if all else fails, I have a plan C, D, and E. Would you like to super-size your value meal?
I am looking for positions closer to home, as I did last year. I like my current school, but the commute is nearly an hour and a half one way and being a Catholic school, the pay is not great. If nothing works out in my job search, I'll stay there.
I'm staying put. I'm single-subject certified 7-12 in a 6-8 building, so there isn't much movement for me. Only one middle school and one high school in our district. I've been here 21 years, so I'm the senior person in our department. I want to stay put, so I'll probably stay put.
Why are all these tenured teaching replying? The OP asked what are you going to people with uncertain jobs are doing. If you're in the OP's situation, as I am!, it's annoying to read "Staying" by a million posters. I see this a lot on the forums. This is why I don't think I will be posting again. There's a bit of a mean spiritedness. I've seen people do it over and over again. Thanks for ruining the day of someone who is currently looking for a job. I'm very HAPPY you have a job while us peon in this forum eat dirt.
I have requested a transfer in district for a middle or secondary social studies position. I would prefer 6th, 7th, or 9th grade world history, as long as it's world history, I don't care what the grade is at this point! I'm over math! I'm also scouting the job vacancies in local districts as well, watching for a posting compatible with what I'm looking for. In my area, social studies positions come up on a regular basis, unlike other areas where they never come up--so if nothing comes up this year, something definitely will in the next year or two. If nothing opens up in the interim, I guess, I will be staying where I'm at...which is 4th grade math/science.
Ummm.... I was not trying to be mean spirited. I am hoping to transfer somewhere else, so right now my future is a bit up in the air. Sorry that was so offensive.
I'm not sure I see how someone else having a job ruins your day, nor do I see the meanness in a poster saying she will have the same job next year.
I'll be returning to the same position. I'm happy to not have to job search this summer! Supposedly we're getting another sped teacher next year, so I'm hoping to move to just K-3.
I'm tenured, I'm staying where I am.I'm blessed to be where I am and sending good wishes to those seeking their own 'happy place':thumb: Members here tend to jump in on any conversations of interest. I'm not sensing meanness in any posts. Good luck to you.
I am not tenured (have always taught in private school and always will) so my contract is always year to year. I work an hour away from home and make considerably less than I made last year when I worked 15 minutes from home. So why am I staying where I am--I am happier than I have been in the past 10 years when I had to leave the school that I am currently at because we could not afford the lower pay and having young children made being an hour away from home very difficult. There is no mean spiritedness intended by anyone here. I wish you and anyone else the best of luck in finding a permanent position for next year. I have enjoyed hearing the plans of the others on the board. After reading posts throughout the year from all these posters--I feel like I know them and knowing their plans for next year--whether they are staying or not and their reasons is a great topic. Just my
Trying to decide if I want to stay at my current job or sub next year. Or move. And I'll keep my tutoring job, because I'm advancing there like crazy.
Ash3, I understand how you feel & you do have a slight point. I'm more interested in the changing plans of others too. But again, like I said in my OP, if you're staying put, great...more power to you! I think I've mentioned this before on this board. I'd love to WAH (work @ home) permanently. It doesn't have to be education-related. As long as I can live comfortably, travel some (1-2 big trips a year), etc., I'll be content! I've been working toward this area STRONGLY since the end of last year.
I'm still somewhat confused by this post. When you wrote it, ash, only 14 people had posted before you. Not all of those were tenured teachers and of those who were, several were looking for job changes, moves, or new careers. The job search can be be very frustrating. Working teachers, however, are not your enemies. In fact, they have a lot to offer to job seekers and new teachers. As a job seeker, you can find very helpful information, job search help, resume tweaking and interview advice here on the boards offered by both tenured and non tenured alike.
Where the heck did all this bitterness come from? Totally inappropriate to the discussion at hand... Anyway, I'm hoping to move up to fifth or sixth grade for next year. I love my third graders, but there are just too many "little kid" qualities in them. I'm an upper elementary teacher at heart.
My plan is to apply again for this year. Had a hiccup last year (best hiccup ever since it was because I gave birth to my son ) Just curious Ms. I, what WAH opportunities do you participate in?
I'm staying put (just got my contract today!). The only way I would leave my current district is if this same position opened up in the district I live in. Currently I drive 40 minutes to/from work so it would be nice to cut down on drive time.
I don't have tenure, but if I'm rehired, I'll probably stay for another year. My husband and I are planning on moving out of the city next summer, so I'll have to job search again then!
Have not received my contract yet but... I have requested a transfer to another school in my district. All requests must be made in writing by May 1st to Human Resource. It's actually the school I started in as the Director of the Early Childhood Before & After School Program. I want to be closer to my mom again (for health reasons) and would love to work with my friends again at my former school..i will also only be 15 minutes away from home which is always a plus. I was told because of redistricting there should be no problem with the transfer, especially since I am waiting for the 2014-15 school year to make the request. I will stay in Special Education as well
Moving to a new district, as most of you probably already know. I'm excited, but nervous. I think it'll be a great district to teach at and a great district for my little boy to be in. It's just getting used to new people, curriculum, admin expectations, etc that are a little unnerving. On a positive note, though, I know about 7 teachers at my new district, so I won't be totally alone. Good luck to all of you job seeking or hoping to move grade levels.
I'm subbing now and hoping to have a full-time position next year. I need work on my interview skills and hope I land some interviews.
Teacher Gii, I'm a restaurant mgmt recruiter where I cold call restaurants & offer them better job opps, but it's up to them to send me a resume if they want to go on an interview. I also evaluate ads. I'm also trying to get a couple other things going. I sure don't want to return to my current job next year! Good luck with your plan.
I have already applied for 7 job in the past few days. While I absolutely love the kids at my school and love administration. I need something a little closer to home. I also think I need a job that has a little lower workload. While I know that I will have to work hard at any job, at my current school I have 1.5 hour classes, no textbooks, and no prep period. Students do have laptops that do help some.
I've spent 3 years in a school that I do not want to be at (not because of this kids--I LOVE LOVE LOVE my kids), trapped by a 3 year contract that I didn't know about when I signed my contract to the district. After this year, I am so over it, I'm moving to a new state--Virginia. I've already applied, went up to a preliminary interview, and began sending out resumes. So far, I have 2 who want to set up an interview right away and 7 others who are interested barring their staffing needs for next year. God willing, I will be far away from my current situation next year!!
I'm fortunate to FINALLY be at a school and in a position I love. Although my school has some major changes coming up and is facing some pretty significant challenges as well, overall I am very happy where I am and plan to stay - so far that's all I've committed to. It's interesting, since I looked for so many years before this I'm sooo used to the mad application rush that begins at this time of year - I still browse postings to see what is out there and keep my resume updated just in case.
I plan on staying at my current school. I am really hoping for a change of grade level though. They moved my grade level last year and I was not a huge fan, I want to move back,
