Just make a search for waxler* and you should find it. (That's the name of my file though)

I tried to click on the book to purchase it, but it doesn't seem to work. Any ideas? Also how many pages is the book? I like to read better when I have it printed out.

I just bought this book and it looks like it will be very helpful.

    Awaxler,

I have a question about networking. First a little background. I just moved to my current state and I have started subbing in my kids school district. Because we are new to the area, I don't have a network really. I have thought of trying for a long-term sub position in order to be noticed or to get a referenece from a principal here, however I wonder how I will be able to go to interviews then without making them get a sub for the sub. Also, the district my kids are in now is not the district I would ideally want to work in. In fact I am hoping I can get a job elsewhere and then move my kids to another district. I have thought about subbing in the district I would like to put my kids in, but they are sub heavy and a 40 minute drive from where I currently live. When I sub, I get compliments from teachers, but I don't think the principals notice. Should I try to get a long-term sub position in a district that I am not crazy about working in. And if I can't get one, how do I get a reference out of subbing, I mean who do I ask for one from? Thanks!

So this is a "book" that is actually a document on the computer? Does it come in real book form at all? I hate the idea of having to print out the entire book myself.

Yes TxSandMom, that is correct. You download it and print it yourself.
Personally, I don't feel that it's worth the twenty dollars.

If you have bought the guide before, years before (in 2006) do you get a free upgrade to the newest edition, or do I have to pay for it?

Thanks, wldy (ie teacher who just got fired.......:( )

I'm pretty sure you get a free upgrade.. or maybe that's just if you bought the 2nd edition.. maybe you have the 1st?

Anyways, this was better than I expected. There really are some things in here that I never would have thought of. I'm sure there's lots of advice to be given right here on this forum, but sometimes you don't know WHAT you need to ask to get the advice you need.

Just wish there was more in here about portfolios.

We'll see if his guarantee holds up and I can get a job at the fair this next weekend.. I'm holding him to it!

(and I still don't like that this book is $20. Printed books 3X as long don't cost this much. The author is making a pretty penny off desperate teachers who can't afford to pay this much in the beginning. I hate to be supporting it, but I want a job next year!)

    ..darn supply and demand.

Could you elaborate on this? Doing things "that way?"
What I mean is, I'm sure your interviewer didn't know you had read Waxler's book, so what was it that impressed him or her?

the way that I answered the questions, that actually were so through sp. that I answered other questions they had, I led the interview, but did it in a polite informative and confident way.

It kind of makes them want to hire you.

    WOW..

    this stuff really DOES work!

I read his book through, plus Jimmy Sweeney's cover letter advise.

When I originally contacted districts (before I read this book), I heard nothing back for a few weeks.

So AFTER reading this book, I sent a "follow-up" cover letter where I reiterated my interest in the position, and again attached the NEW cover letter and resume. The NEXT day I heard back from my TOP TWO districts who wanted to set up interviews with me!!

So I'm at the job fair now where I had the interviews set up.

My number 1 district interviewed me yesterday (pre-screening) and will call back today if they want to interview me again.

My number 2 district offered me a contract, and DIDNT EVEN INTERVIEW ME!!! :woot:

The principal spoke with me for a while, but he basically said "(Human Resources) was so impressed with you, she asked me just to check you out and make sure you'd be a good fit. I have a list of interview questions I'm supposed to ask but you've already answered most of them with your cover letter and philosophy statement. What questions do you have?"

It's an awesome position! I'm just stressing out waiting to see if my number 1 district is going to call me back.... and I hate to keep the number 2 district waiting for my decision... Well... I need to go down there to make sure he knows I'm still considering and doesn't offer it to somebody else!

It's so hard not to just break and accept that offer NOW!!

    I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!

i purchased this a few months ago and havent gotten around to writing here about it. i would say most if not all of the information is pretty common sense and if you know anything about applying for teaching jobs you probably already know all this stuff, especially if you are an avid reader of this forum! i did enjoy the sample interview question and answers but as an elementary teacher they didnt help me as much as i might have liked. to be honest, i;m not sure its worth the money, you can find this suff elsewhere on the internet for free in my opinion.
