No, the book is not specific to certain subjects and yes, I do believe that it will help you in preparing for a secondary math position or any other teaching position.

The reality is you not get many content specific questions. For example, it is unlikely that I would be asked in an interview "What are four causes of the Civil War?" It is much more likely that I would be asked, "How would you teach the causes of the Civil War?"

In my book I list the 25 of the most likely questions to be asked with tips on how to answer each and every question (regardless of grade level or subject area). Then I also provide a sample answer. The sample answer is from the point of view of a middle school social studies teacher...me

The best way to use this book is to read all the questions, tips, and sample answers and then adjust them to meet your grade level, subject area, and of course...your personality!

Reading this book alone will not get you a teaching job. However, if you actually apply the strategies taught in the book you will greatly increase your chances and definitely give yourself an edge over the competition.

I bought this book and usually I don't do those kinds of things. I found it helpful for me. I was doing many of the things suggested but found that there were two things most helpful for me. One was the comment about making everything relate to my own experience and the other was the questions to ask at the end. Those questions really had the administrator thinking and I believe that they liked them. It showed an interest in the school. I'm glad I bought the e-book. It was helpful!

 

I bought it, and it was awesome! I had my first interview yesterday (I will be a first year teacher) and at the end I was complemented by the principal. He told me I did really well and was surprised when I mentioned that it was my first interview. I got a call today, the principal said if he had two openings he would have hired me. They already have a new teacher on their team (One of my fellow graduates) and he said with two other teachers teaching Kindergarten for the first time, he had to hire a teacher with Kindergarten experience. I felt great about it even though I missed out on my dream job. But, I can't beat myself up over lacking experience because I cannot control that. I was less crushed because I was told I had done a great job. I think this book helped me be prepared. I have usually interviewed well in the past, but being new to teaching I was nervous. What school district? I'm in my last year of certification in Mobile County and I will get this book when I get my financial aid money from my university...but it's very hard to get a teaching job in Mobile County from what I heard, but i'm applying in January when I start student teaching.

Adam, I just have to write this to tell you and others of my experience after purchasing your 3rd edition Interview eBook. I have been pounding the pavement for a couple of months with applications and resumes in hand. I have only been certified in EC-4 (Generalist) since May 07 and Special Ed. (EC-12) since June 07 and didn't do well in my three interviews (obviously) and so didn't get hired. The same night after ordering your 3rd edition (and reading it for three hours straight), I decided to get more aggressive and wrote an e-mail directly to a principal of a transition special ed school because I knew there was an opening (I sent the e-mail at around 1 A.M.). Then early in the morning I sent a fax of my resume to the secretary (around 8:30 A.M.). This principal called me within an hour after I sent her the fax and spoke with me about my experiences as a special ed assistant and as a substitute teacher. She happened to know a special ed director that I worked for as an assistant and asked me if I minded if she spoke to her about me. Of course I said no, I didn't mind. Ten minutes later she called me back and asked if I could meet her for an interview in an hour and 15 minutes (I hadn't even showered yet!!) and I said of course (fortunately the place was only 6 miles away). I went in and was interviewed by a board of four people which included the principal. As they asked me questions, I remembered so much of what you spoke of in your book and I knew I was doing very well because three times they told me that I had already answered their question before getting to them!! I can't tell you how much your eBook helped me!! I left the interview and the principal called me as I entered my driveway and said I got the job and would go for orientation the very next day (which was today) because I am a first time Teacher!!! I couldn't believe it and my whole family is thrilled! I must add that I do have a Masters degree in education (finished in May of this year) and have 5 years experience in the same district as an aid and as a sub, but I am absolutely certain that I would not have sent her an e-mail or faxed her a resume because I had already sent in a letter of intent to the district main office, if I had not read your book. I would have just waited to see what happened. Your tips and and interview answers were all fresh in my mind which gave me the confidence I needed to ace the interview. Thank You Adam! My passion for the job was genuine and my qualifications are very valuable, but doing well in an interview is much more important than I ever thought before reading your eBook. Those of you who desire to be hired as a teacher, take my advice and pay the twenty bucks for this eBook and read it, it truly helped me land a job! Another funny thing is that I have subbed in this district for three years and know all the teaching jobs and schools. Out of all the teaching jobs in the whole district (a very big district), this is the one job I wanted the most and it's so close to home. As a bonus...this district pays the best in the whole city and surrounding areas!! I can't thank you enough Adam!! The best $20 I have spent in a long time! When something works, I like to tell people about it. Sorry if this is long-winded, but I am just thrilled!

Adam says the book on his site sells for $17.95, but here, I see it's $19.95, so where's the special price? I realize it's all about $20, but a couple of bucks is a couple fo bucks!)

 

Let me clear things up...

This thread has been going on a while...The second edition was selling on my site for 17.95 and on this site for 12.95.

Yes, Buy It! I have some other interview books, but this one is by far the best! I felt super confident and prepared when I went for my interview! I got the job! I've only had two interviews so far, both for positions in Independent Study Charter School programs. The first interview I had was before I purchased and read the ebook; the second was after.

The difference was clear to me, and I assume to those with whom I interviewed. During my interview with the first school, I was more nervous and not as prepared. My interview with the second was smoother; I felt more confident, and I heard the magic phrase, "Well, you've already answered this one..."

I'm still waiting to hear from that second school. I know I'm still in the running. If I get it, I'll have to admit that some credit goes to Adam and his e-book.

Mr. Waxler would you have a minute to give some advice?

About 2 weeks ago I interviewed at a district. I truly felt it went well. Much more so than any other I have done in the past. I have called so far a few times in regards to the status of my application and still get somewhat the same answer of "We are still looking at what we need in our schools". I have also noticed that they have reopened their application pool. What exactly does this all mean for me?

I know I need to continue to pursue this and really show my interest I am just not sure how at this point. I have just gotten on their sub list and plan on leaving the documents you suggested in your new book with each principal. What more should I do? My only wish is that I had gotten this book even a day or two before that interview so I could have followed it to a "t".

So sorry I didn't get back to you sooner...I have been slammed at school this year (more so than usual)...seems the county keeps dumping more and more on us...

Unfortunately, it means they are still looking. That doesn't mean it wont be you who gets the job, but for some reason theywant to interview more people.

You are doing all the right things...keep following up...keep making contacts...just because they didn't hire you this time around doesn't mean they wont hire you next time around. Often times, there are many qualified candidates...we hire who we think will fit the best, but we keep others on file in case something else opens up. I have sat on many interviews committees where we wish we could have hired 3 or 4 different teachers, but there was only one position open.

Now you know what to do for next time

I purchased your book last Friday and had an interview on Monday. I had several interviews last summer, but nothing turned up, so I wanted to be more prepared for this one. I read the book and came up with a bunch of examples for the sample interview questions and made a list of my own questions. The interview went well and they called me back on offered the job on Wednesday. I have been commuting 3 1/2 hours from my home every Sunday and returning on the weekends for a year and a half. Now I'll be teaching 15 minutes from my house and making DOUBLE (yes, you read that right) my salary!

While there were some good tips in this, I am very hesitant to believe a book about how to interview and write appropriate resumes and cover letters when the book itself includes spelling errors and where the author refers to children/students as "kids." two of the biggest no-no's ever in interviewing and writing professional documents...my bad for the impulsive buy.

 

Thanks for the honest feedback. I will make sure to go back through the book and check for spelling mistakes.

However, to suggest that refering to children/students as "kids" as being one of the biggest no-no's in interviewing is not only an exageration, it is politically correct nonsense (in my opinion) .

If I am interviewing a potential candidate for a teaching position and that person refers to her students only as "students" or "children" I would think that was quite odd. In fact, it would indicate to me that the person has very little classroom experience as the vast majority of teachers refer to their students as their "kids". In fact, I think it would come off rather stiff. Remember, the people conducting the interview want to know that you will be able to foster relationships with both your students and colleagues.

I hope this doesn't come across that I don't take criticism well ...In fact, it is through criticism and comments that I have been able to improve the book with each new edition. I completely agree with you about spelling mistakes...you paid for it and there shouldn't be any...However, I couldn't disagree more with your second point.

I'm wondering why the book is priced so high when it is not bound, and in fact, if I purchase it, I will be providing the paper and ink to print it?

 

I bought the book a year ago and landed a job. It is well worth the price. I have bought other books more expensive about finding a teaching job that were not as good.

 

Though I haven't gotten a job from reading and taking Adam's advice, I have found myself more confident walking into interviews. He gives real world sample answers which I haven't found anywhere else. It is worth paying the price...and you wouldn't expect him to write it for free.

 

No, I wouldn't, nor did I suggest that it should be free. Simply questioning the justification of the cost. On a teacher's salary, I watch my pennies.

 

As a teacher himself I'm sure Mr. Waxler knows all about having to watch pennies and has done his best to keep the cost of his book down. Personally, I used this book a couple of years ago and indeed, with its helpful hints landed a very good teaching job. In fact, I've only come back to this page to order the newest version before I embark on another "closer to home" job search. (Spending ALL my pennies on gasoline) Seriously though, this book is worth it!

I'm not really sure what to say...I guess whether or not something is "worth it" all depends on the individual. If the book does NOT help you get a job then I guess it was not worth it. On the other hand, if the book does help you get a job then it would certainly be worth much more than 20 bucks. I guess only you can make that call...

I also asked myself this question a few days ago, and decided not to buy the book. Besides, there are a lot of kind people in this website who are willing to help job seekers and answer our questions. Yesterday I posted a question from a job interview I had and I received a lot of insightful answers and I did not have to pay for it. Thanks to all those people who answered my question. I really appreciated it.

 

I have enjoyed reading the discussion here as well. It has been quite informative.
As to the book, I did buy it, and was disappointed. Really the tips and information given were pretty much common sense stuff and nothing that wasn't covered in my education program. I will probably get some criticism for criticizing the book, but if you haven't bought it, I say save your money.

 

Hey I bought the book and I thought it was helpful. I had a screening interview at a job fair a couple of weeks ago and there were quite a few questions (although worded slightly different during the interview) asked from his book. It got me a second interview...which hopefully I'll do well on...

I bought this and read through the interview questions part at least 4 times. When I went on my interview yesterday there were only a couple of questions that were NOT covered in this book. It was well worth the money. Those, to be exact, 3 questions were: What will your references say about you?, How would you deal with a multicultural classroom? and How would you teach someone to read?. The rest of the questions I was asked were covered in this book.

Well I broke down and bought the book I think it was definitely worth the money. I already practice most of the interview strategies in the book, but reading over them helped me solidify my answers and helped my confidence level in my answers. The cover letter section was particularly helpful as I think my cover letter might have been a little outdated. I say it was a worthwhile investment

 

Just checking in as a fellow (former) Long Islander. My husband and I grew up in Oyster Bay. Lived in Moriches, then Huntington and then settled in Greenlawn for 10 years. We recently moved to greener, cheaper pastures and have been living mortgage-free in Ohio off the equity we got when we sold our NY house.

Thank you thank you thank you for this book! I have been looking for a teaching job for 3 years now, and have been unsuccessful. I wasn't able to "close the deal" at any interview at both public and private schools. I bought the book recently, and interviewed at two Catholic schools. I ended up with job offers from both! I never thought it would land a job at all with the current teaching market in my area, but I am happy to say that I can't wait to start my middle school Science teaching position!
