I will say that was a weird - grown-up experience for me...going to Dr. appointments alone....Growing up I always had my mom with me, and the first couple of times I went alone were really weird for me.

I'd like to revise my list...I realized I must have grown up when I went shopping this afternoon and every pair of khaki's I tried on sat below my butt. I remember when super low rise pants were awesome and totally wearable for me (I'm pretty little), but now I just could not get them to fit or look at all decent. Certainly not work wear. I thought of this thread while I was shopping...

I knew I had grown up when I was out for lunch with a bunch of girlfriends and all we talked about was laundry, cooking and cleaning! Times have changed for me :)

    I knew I was a grown-up when....

I didn't know who Hannah Montana or the Jonas Brothers are

I started listening to NPR instead of Top 40

I went to bed at 10pm and woke up at 5:00am for student teaching (and didn't mind it at all)

I got my first teaching position ;)

Hang in there... I am free if you want to chat, vent, cry, and laugh... all at the same time.

I knew I was a grow up when I had to change my Mom's diapers...

Get to a point where you can say "No, I can't let somebody else do that..." (that is btw.. what my daughter says... sigh)

You have to step up, and step in and help! Because she has done the same thing for you.....

I don't even remember when and where...I just know there I was, and she needed me. And I just jumped in and helped.

    ditto..

but with just one daughter! :)

OMG... hijack... what on earth do you give a 25 year old young woman :wow: (I almost said 'girl' for her birthday??? I got a few months to plan, and I feel it should be something really good, and really special. And not a lame, 'rent a hotel hall and invite old and new friends' party. I want to give her something special... like giving her 25 of her favorite things...

Everyone feel free to jump in and help me out!!!

Somehow, 25 gift cards instantly comes to my mind....

When you can't sleep past 5 hours. Look, it's 1am, and I bet I will still wake up at 6 or 7, when I finally go to bed! I remember all my old aunts getting up at 4 and 5 am. Later learned that older people need less sleep, body does less work.

I can't figure that out! I wish I could sleep later. As it is, I have no where to go! I pray for the day I get that offer, and can start setting my alarm again!

But I wake up every morning around 5-630...

When I bought my condo. And paint, and sink, carpeting, OMG.. this year-air conditioner (which I can't even see because it's on the roof!) !!! ...

    and... toliet...

Because when my Mom was really mad, she always yelled at us, when were teenagers, and acting crazy..

"You don't have a pot to piss in and a window to throw it out of..."

    Now I do!

Eyesight is the first to go...

When I started seeing gray hair...

When loud music got on my nerves...

When I started using the phrase... "getting on my nerves"

When I had to kill a bug!

When I spent my first Christmas in my apartment, and realized Santa really wasn't coming. (some how, I still believed he had a magic key, or would break in, :)rolleyes:) and put something under my tree...)

When I turned 40, and started wearing glasses. Hate them to this day, and will go out of my way not to wear them. In the land of denial forever. If you didn't have them when you were a kid, everybody was 4-eyes... or a grown up. Nobody young wore glasses!!

I am farsighted. Prsybopia - poor vision in old age!! I can read books in a window across the street! But I can't see receipts, dictionaries, my own notes, ugh...medicine bottles. I don't even like crossword puzzles anymore! There are no fun because I can't see them!!! Drives me crazy to have to find glasses in middle of night, and put them on my face just to take Nyquill!!

    sigh...

I knew I was a grown up when I started talking, and writing.. way too much!

KSeed - I'm an NPR junkie! My whole day is off if I don't have the radio on in the morning ... and what a way to unwind on the drive home!

MasterPreK - LOVE the mom comment!

    =====

I knew I was a grown up when I felt okay not telling someone goodnight (went from family to roommates before living alone).

I knew I was grown up when my family turned to me for advice on my ailing grandfather.

I knew I was grown up when I walked away from the Ph.D. to become a HS teacher and felt 100% satisified with the decision.

I knew I was grown up when....
...I started asking for things like towels and new tires for my birthday :-(
...my favorite thing to listen to on the radio was "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" on NPR
...I realized I was the one being looked to for "wisdom" by my step-son, and that no one else was going to save me from being his "official word"

    National Public Radio

National Public Radio (NPR) is a privately and publicly funded non-profit membership media organization that serves as a national syndicator to 797 public radio stations in the United States. NPR was created in 1970, following congressional passage of the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967, signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson, which established the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and also led to the creation of the Public Broadcasting Service. The network was founded in 1970 with 30 employees and 90 public radio stations as charter members.
NPR produces and distributes news and cultural programming. Its member stations are not required to broadcast all these programs and most public radio stations broadcast programs from all three providers. Its flagships are two drive time news broadcasts, Morning Edition and the afternoon All Things Considered; both are carried by nearly all NPR member stations and in 2002 were second and third-most popular radio programs in the country. In a Harris poll conducted in 2005, NPR was voted the most trusted news source in the US.

I bought a car at 19, lived on my own for several years, and got married, but those things didn't make me feel grown up. I KNEW I was grown up when...

I bought a really good sleeper sofa (that wasn't going to be my bed). I actually thought "Wow, I'm a grown-up" when I gave them a check!

I called security/police to break up parties so I could sleep.

I adopted a puppy without asking anyone.

My 25th is coming up and no one seems to think it's a big deal at all. I think it's kind of a cool birthday, the last "I can still sort of get away with stuff because I'm not 30" type birthday. I am throwing myself a party, but my husband is doing all the cooking!! My mom got me a gift card, bookmark, and a game.

    Hijacking in progress....

I really enjoy National Public radio, especially Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me and Morning Edition.... Check out http://www.npr.org/ and you can find your local channel or listen to it streaming online.

    I'm done hijacking... :)

I kind-of felt like I was thrown into adulthood. My parents moved to Paraguay, literally, 8 days after I returned from New Zealand (student teaching) and graduated college. Since I graduated in December I was planning on living with them until I got a teaching job (which I thought would be in August, boy was I wrong!). Instead, they gave me their car and said "the rent is paid for the rest of the month, decide what to do from there"
I also knew I was an adult when the money I get for birthdays/Christmas/any holiday goes to logical things like food, rent, or gas.

I have felt like an adult since fifteen, basically because I started working and paying for things the vast majority of fifteen year olds don't pay for. I knew I was an adult, however when I was 17. I appreciate having been forced/given my indepedence at a younger age.

Hmmm... How is this different from WBBM News Radio 78, "All News All The Time." ??? That's the station we always listened to for up-to-the-minute info on storms and other events. It also has talk shows.

Is it similiar to PBS - Public Brodcasting Stations WTTW - Ch. 11, on TV???

NPR has "This American Life" which I really enjoy. Also, while they do talk about news I feel they do a lot more in depth pieces, not just report news.

I knew I was a grown up when I became a mommy. I know that sounds cliche' but it is true. Until that point, I was still into socializing with my friends, going out on the town, going to concerts, etc. Once my son was born, it was like I instantly grew up and none of that other stuff seemed important anymore.
