Today was the first day of classes with children for us. I had 19 on my list. Thirteen showed up. I then had another student added to the list around 8:15. This is the first time on the first day that I have been able to give something to do and they did it. No questions asked, no trying to sneak and talk to their neighbor. I gave the directions (had about 7 there when I did so), told them if someone came in and sat down in the seat beside them they were supposed to use their inside voices to give "whisper directions". They DID. I was able to deal with two parents, deal with all the transportation and beginning of the year attendance paperwork and go ask a teacher across the hall a question, then have 2 people come in to ask me a question all w/o having to correct ANY student behavior. PWHATLEY, I have you to thank for this: First thing this morning I put the phrase on the board "Keep your teacher happy" along with a smiley face and a frowny face. I then listed the "rewards" for the smiley and the "consequences" for the frowny. That was all it took. This was the best first day I have had in the past three years. Am thinking positive that it will last for the next 179.
