Today was the first day of classes with children for us. I had 19 on my list. Thirteen showed up. I then had another student added to the list around 8:15. This is the first time on the first day that I have been able to give something to do and they did it. No questions asked, no trying to sneak and talk to their neighbor. I gave the directions (had about 7 there when I did so), told them if someone came in and sat down in the seat beside them they were supposed to use their inside voices to give "whisper directions". They DID. I was able to deal with two parents, deal with all the transportation and beginning of the year attendance paperwork and go ask a teacher across the hall a question, then have 2 people come in to ask me a question all w/o having to correct ANY student behavior.

PWHATLEY, I have you to thank for this: First thing this morning I put the phrase on the board "Keep your teacher happy" along with a smiley face and a frowny face. I then listed the "rewards" for the smiley and the "consequences" for the frowny. That was all it took.

This was the best first day I have had in the past three years. Am thinking positive that it will last for the next 179.

Congratulations on your first day success! That is crazy that you're back in school, though. The kids don't start back for another three weeks in my district.

That's awesome! I hope my first day goes that well. Anyway, everything I've read says that the first day sets the tone for the rest of the year, so you should be set!

Yea for you! My first day is in a week, and I have been a bit worried. Everyone keeps telling me I have a great class- but I am never sure until I see them for myself.

Congratulations! I'm so proud, lol! You did it all on your own, girl. If you don't give off an authoritative aura, the kids know it & boy do they take advantage of it!

The irony in all this is that I showed my rules (that began with keep your dear teacher happy) and was told that my first one was unacceptable because it would be found offensive by some parents. HUH? I've never been accused of THAT before! So now, my puny little #1 rule is "Be the best YOU you can be!" Not quite what I wanted, and it cost me almost $10 to order new (small car magnet, bus. card magnets & bus. cards with the rules on them) stuff, but oh, well. Sometimes you have to pick your battles!

Alright, fellow Georgian! Blow some knowledge and happiness to the west of you on Monday.

I left school with no intention of going back this weekend to finish anything. Plans for first day (Monday)are done. That's all I could manage after a full day of meetings. FULL DAY!

Well, as I mentioned before, we can't even get into our classrooms yet. I can't imagine starting school now. Yikes. However, I bet you get out earlier than we do, so it all equals out! Congratulations on having an awesome first day. I hope mine goes as well. I'm always a nervous wreck on the first day...even after six years.

Wow! Nice Job. I cannot believe how early you start! I do not go back to work until after Labor Day! I am going to RI for 10 days for my vacation. I am not bringing any work to do. However, my cuz just got her 1st teaching job, so chances are I will be helping her while I am in RI.

Good luck with the rest of the school year!!! :)
