    Hello :)

I was wondering if anyone could share thematic ideas that could be used as a classroom theme and/or motto throughout the school year? I teach high school English and will probably have ninth or tenth grade (perhaps both) this school year. I'm also scheduled to teach a journalism course as well. Thanks in advance for any ideas!!

    Make wise choices.

I am incorporating in my discipline plan and my curriculum how everything is about choices that the student makes.

My theme is my content--British literature. I also have a cap and gown up on the wall "holding" a diploma case, and I tell my students to "Keep your eyes on the prize."

I teach so much different topics in history, I can't really have a solid theme. Different walls are devoted to different historical topics when it comes to posters and such. And my ceiling have flags of the world hanging from it. But that's about as far as it goes...

Thanks for the ideas! I came up with some acronym ideas for a "motto" and am thinking about using them in addition to my existing rules. I'm really trying to stress making wise choices, developing good character and being responsible for your actions.

I really like the idea of incorporating something about making wise choices. It's something that all students could benefit from! I don't have a theme but am trying to have different "areas" for my different classes. I have 8th, 10th, and 12th as well as a speech class! I have 6 Shakespeare posters, a bunch of literary terms/devices posters, and a commonly misused words poster so far. I am planning on getting a couple "Farcebook" posters once I know exactly which units I'm teaching!

if you are teaching literacy, the only thing I can think of is:

The pen is mightier than the sword.

This might not apply to your subject matter, but I've always loved this quote:

'Be the change you wish to see in the world'

Someday I hope to use it as our school theme for the year.
