If you are a teacher in the city of Chicago, Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Washington, D.C. Or in the states of Alabama, Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Texas you are eligible for www.donorschoose.org .

Here is a letter from last years back to school campaign. As the charity expands, sometimes grants aren't funded as fast as they once were. I have won over 30 grants in 3 years though. They have stemmed from simple supplies like copy paper and binders for our journals to a 300 dollar digital camera and photo printer. Sign up at the website. If you have problems/questions after reading their website feel free to respond here or pm me! Good Luck! Think outside the box. Get supplies!

    Friends,

Did you know it’s easy to get books, supplies, technology, and even field trips funded for your students, even if your school won’t pay for it?

DonorsChoose connects public school educators like us with caring individuals who directly fund our ideas and turn them into classroom realities. All you have to do is submit a proposal at www.DonorsChoose.org describing the classroom materials or activity you're asking to have funded and why—it takes less than 10 minutes. Your proposal gets posted on www.DonorsChoose.org to be reviewed by interested donors, and when it gets funded, you send a small thank-you package to the donors. It works!

DonorsChoose is about to start a Back to School campaign that will bring thousands of people to their site looking for projects to fund. I didn’t want you to miss out on this opportunity. Take a look at www.DonorsChoose.org and think about whether there’s something you want your students to have this fall.

It’s so simple to turn your best ideas into classroom realities, I can’t understand why anyone wouldn’t post a proposal if they knew about it. So I’m spreading the word about this back-to-school campaign.

    Pass it on!

    What are you waiting for?

No problem, if you have any questions feel free to ask.

I haven't posted a new proposal in awhile (since I'm not sure if I'm teaching Pre-K or 4-6 next year!) They have changed things here and there (like amazon.com isn't a vendor anymore) but it is pretty self explanatory. I pretty much get everything I ask for from them through Lakeshore or Office Depot. I used to also use Amazon. Just a warning in advance, sometimes Barnes and Nobel is finicky on their site. Have fun! If you want sample proposals of nay of the ones I won I can send them your way too.

They expand a little more each year. Usually around November. I am not sure what their total criteria is for starting. Chicago got on board my first year of teaching in 2004.
I think when they took in all the Katrina regions in they expanded pretty rapidly, so I don't know what that means for next year.

Beware, though, if you are a NEW school in one of these areas, it can take up to 4 MONTHS for them to update the system and recognize your campus. During that time, you can not apply for any grants.

I'm wondering what htey are doing about our new principal issue here since 70 + schools have new principals and they always send an e-mail to the principal for confirmation. Since I've done some newspaper stories for them I have a few inside contacts. I should make sure they are aware of what is going on.

Thats good to know. I would have hoped (since they have a local office here) that someone would have clued them into the fact that there are 70 + new principals in our system. (Yes it is going to be an interesting year!)

I love this website too!! Last school year, my proposal of 3 student computers was funded, and they were sooo proud! We were told by the school's tech dpt that they were the only sutdents in district to have dvd players/burners on their student computers :) They got a big kick out of that. Definitely worth your time to come up with a proposal :D

Where did you get the information about them funding the first $50? I submitted mine, it was posted, and they didn't fund any of it. Do they not fund any until someone else decides to help? Thanks for the information.

The information about that was in an e-mail that they sent out. It had to be with in a certain date frame.

It is going national in the fall:

    from their website:
    Is my school eligible?
We currently serve all public schools in Alabama, Chicago, Indiana, Los Angeles, Louisiana, Mississippi, New York (city and state), North Carolina, the San Francisco Bay Area, South Carolina, Texas, and Washington, D.C.
We will be serving all public schools in the Continental United States this fall. If your state/city is not listed above, please email newteacher@
donorschoose.org and we will notify you when you are eligible to submit a request at DonorsChoose.org.

Mine was submitted and posted between the dates you listed, but maybe there was more to it than I knew. I had submitted one to them a year or two ago, but never got any funding so I'm crossing my fingers that it's better this time.

I wonder if it was a Chicago thing? I didn't submit any, so I don't know. I know Chicago is one of their best regions as far as getting donations. Probably because our school system is so segregated by economics (and race) that most of our schools are above 90% free and reduced lunch.

I posted between the specific dates as well and nothing has been donated.
    I keep checking every day.

I'm not sure than. Like I said, maybe it was a chicago specific e-mail. Or maybe it was for people who have gotten donations in the past? I dunno. I just know that is what the e-mail said, and I iddn't post between the specific dates and so then I didn't get anything.

They have some new rule where things can only be posted for 8 months.

The strangest thing is that I got the email too! They had my email address because I have received donations in the past.
Hmmm...maybe they are waiting to see if they are the winners of the American Express contest in which they will receive up to 5 million dollars to fulfill proposals?
Did anyone register their American Express Card? The more votes, the better chance of donorscoose winning the money for us.

    Word on the Street

We don't mind when people talk about us - in fact, we encourage it!

DonorsChoose is about to throw open its doors to all public schools in the U.S., and we want to let everyone know. How do you think we should let teachers in our newly served areas know about us - conferences, blog posts, graffiti on an overpass?

Tell us your ideas on how to get the word out to new regions and you may see them in the next newsletter.

ooh, good luck Christy! Don't worry it will happen! So far I have had 3 proposals funded and 1 proposal only needs $36 more dollars. All of my proposals have been between $100 and $400. I think lower amounts are faster getting funded. But then again,a kinder teacher at my school has put in 2 proposals for close to $1000 and they both have been funded. I am soooo thankful for donorschoose. It has helped me soooo much!

I posted my 3rd proposal the other day and got the email Thursday that they were posting it (Forensics kits). Friday I got an email saying it had been funded! So that makes one partially funded and one completely. I love it! :D It's like Christmas time! Thanks again for sharing this great resource!

I received $300 in art supplies, a document camera, and (most recently) a year long subscription to Time For Kids magazine for each student. You can ask for basically anything the kids need.
