Have any of you written actual grants for classroom materials (meaning besides DonorsChoose grants)?

I'm thinking of writing a large grant supplied by Toshiba for $5000 of materials, and I don't really know what to expect.

There is a local group here, and I have received $1,000 grants (the maximum) several times.

I took a course on grant writing in college and have never written one since.

I've written and received multiple grants. I read grant applications for one of our state grants. First, go for it. Even if you don't get it, every grant you write makes you feel more confident. Read the instructions carefully and follow them to the letter. Sometimes the smallest thing can get your grant disqualified. Have a clear plan for what you want and how you will use it. As teachers we know there are a million ways to use the materials that we get, but for the grant have at least one definite, relevant plan to use. If you're writing for technology, make sure that it is a crucial part of the project. If you don't get it. Don't give up. Find another one and try again. If you do get it...find another one and try again. They're a little addictive. :)

    Thank Christy!

I had one question. The minimum grant amount is about 5000 dollars. I can go for just the minimum and ask for a full class set of electronics kits to contribute to a library makerspace for prototyping (they're called LittleBits), or I can go the full monty, and ask for the electronics set, as well as one or more 3D printers, and possibly other things and frame the project as helping us to develop an entire makerspace from scratch.

    What would you recommend?

My largest grant has been submitted. I never ended up getting an answer to the question about how much I should go for from the grant providers (they never returned my calls), but I decided that since I was putting so much effort into it, I might as well ask for the full monty.

I've already written two other grants, one with DonorsChoose, and another with another organization. It IS addicting. I've been getting my friends to read and proofread them for me as well. The total amount I've written grants for is $9000! It would be amazing if I got them all.

I commend you for writing so many grants!

I co-wrote a grant for over $300,000. It was NOT fun. I'd do it again with my amazing co-writers, since we were awarded the grant, but not for another year. My brain hurts.

Hope you hear from them soon!

Peregrin, do you have a list of grants that can be applied to as a teacher? I searched halfheartedly a while back, but it seemed like all the big ones needed to have a "Friends of (School)" attached to qualify. We don't have that. :(

Sorry about the late reply FourSquare. Our district keeps a pretty comprehensive grant list that's kept up to date. I found mine here: http://www.mdusd.org/current-grants-available

Also I re-found this thread to say that I got the grant!!

I have written over $100,000 worth of grants in the last seven years. Mostly for my husband's career tech classroom. About $10,000 has been for my classroom and the rest have been for his.
