I posted in the other section but thought that this would work better. I have to teach writing and want to teach the 5 paragraph essay. I have no idea how to do it.

How do you all teach writing? Any good books or websites?

    Thanks!!

    Dear Sue,
Ms. Jas recommended the book Razzle Dazzle Writing the authors last name is Forney (I bought it from Amazon). I am just starting to use it but I really like it a lot. There is another one I got from Scholastic and it starts with teaching how to write a five paragraph essay. I will get the title and post it tomorrow. This book gives you a model of the writing and gives pointers on teaching it.

We use Lucy Calkins. My kids hate it! It is the first year the school is doing it. I can't say I am crazy about it. I used it in 1st grade, and although I can't say I cared for it at the time, some of my 1st graders wrote nearly as well as my 5th graders. It does work! However, to begin them on the program in 5th grade for the 1st time is no fun.... If it is something they do every year, I think it will then be great. So, I only have to wait 6 more years

I have one that I picked up after a teacher conference I attended.

It's called "The Write Genre", and it's excellent... I've used it with my writing groups.

My district focuses on the 6+1 traits of writing, so I bought the 6+1 traits book...Some of the lessons are so-so, but some of them are way fun and the kids love them, you just have to pick and choose. It also saved me when I had my evaluation, I just adapted a lesson plan from the book and turned it in :)
