I am writing a grant to improve our school's writing program. I would like to go to several different conventions/conferences and design my own program or if I really like a particular program to go with that. I am doing this with a team but we are having trouble finding many programs that are not inservice days. Most companies seem to only do that now.
I have found NCATE, CATE and a few little ones but I would love some input. Have any of you gone to really helpful conferences on writing? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

I went to the New Jersey Writing Convention in Texas a few years back. I loved it.

Thank you. I will look for that one. Why is the "New Jersey writing convention" in Texas?! :)

It's just the name of the program.

I would suggest looking for a National Writing Project site near you. These are intensive several-weeks long workshops that are specifically focused on the teacher-as-writer and writing instruction. You can find out more here: http://www.nwp.org/

You can't beat the Writing Project. It certainly changed the way I teach writing for the better! I don't know how it is in California, but in my neck of the woods the Writing Project is free graduate credit and you get a stipend for taking the class. It was a wonderful experience!
