I am slotted to teach language arts for the first time next year. I plan on teaching language arts using the Writer's Workshop model. Does anyone have any good resources for teaching Writer's workshop in middle school?

Two words: Nancie Atwell. Get yourself copies of In the Middle and Lessons That Change Writers. I'm not saying that you should try to be Nancie, but rather take her books as a jumping off point. The Lessons book is the foundation for my workshop. I take them and make them mine. It's worked incredibly well.

Another great resource is Lucy Calkins' The Art of Teaching Writing. Good luck! You will have a ball and see incredible results!

I second The Art of Teaching Writing and Nancie Atwell's books. There is also another author who writes with Atwell...I can't find him but he writes books about mini-lessons in writing that go up to middle school. Good luck!!

Linda Rief's Seeking Diversity is another great one.

I just heard her speak, and I was astounded. It was like hearing a rock star! She is awesome--and very inspiring!

I also recommend these books by Ralph Fletcher:
How Writer's Work: Finding a Process That Works for You
A Writer's Notebook: Unlocking the Writer Within You

These books are not specifically about writing workshop, but they are excellent resources to use at the beginning of the year when teaching the writing process.
