I am a new teacher and will be teaching 5-8th grade language arts. Could someone recommend a good guide for Writer's Workshop? I haven't done it before and there is not a set curriculum at my school. It's basically make it up as you go along and I am feeling really overwhelmed! Did I mention that I have to teach art too?

I'd read Nancie Atwell's In the Middle. There is a companion set called Lessons That Change Writers, which takes the lessons she describes in her book and does the prep work for you.

    Good luck with the year!

Lessons that Change Writers is a godsend to any secondary English teacher out there doing Writers Workshop. I love it! It's expensive, but worth it! You get a whole binder of her yearly lessons!
