My school is doing a huge "6 Trait" writing push next year. I am familiar with the 6 Traits and used them in my classroom last year. However, I am hoping to introduce a very structured "Writer's Workshop" into my classroom this year. I know that I will be using the mini-lesson, status of the class, conference/free write, and author's chair with my students.

For some reason, I am having trouble trying to mesh the 6 Traits and Writer's Workshop together. How do you get the 6 Traits in, while still allowing students to participate in an authentic Writer's Workshop?

Any advice you could offer would be much appreciated!

You could do mini lessons on the six traits... Each week or so you could focus on a different trait. That's how I plan on doing it.

I see the 6 Traits as defining my writer's workshop. It really breaks down the writing process into a common language for the kids, and allows them to focus in on parts of their writing without getting overwhelmed by the process. I'm going to start going through my picture books this summer and sorting them into mini-lessons for models.

Jem-my district uses 6 traits and created a picture book doc. that fit with each trait. It's at school but I can share it tomorrow if it will help anyone.

I would be interested in getting that. My district is pushing the 6+1 traits and I would like to start the Writers Workshop too. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I would love to see the picture books also! Any help is much appreciated.

One more question - When you're using 6 Traits to drive your Writer's Workshop do students start a new writing each day/week focusing on the trait be taught or do they choose their own topic and go at their own pace?
