I'd like to use writer's notebooks this year, but I'm a little unclear about how to work them in. How do you use them in your classroom?

We don't use them in 1st, but here is my understanding of how the upper grades use them at my school:

In the front, generate list of topics that they can always write about. Then, they complete their writing during writers workshop in the notebook. Then they publish a piece from there, adding details, etc. If you google Beth Newingham, she has a lot on her site about writers notebooks and if I taught upper elementary I would def follow her model!

    Two book suggestions:
    1. Writing Workshop By: Ralph Fletcher and JoAnn Portalupi
    2. Notebook Know-How By: Aimee Buckner
They both give an understanding on how to use it in your classroom as well as some good writing prompts/ strategies.
