I want to use writers notebooks this year. How do you use them in your classroom?

If we are creating an original story, students should fill in a concept map, freewrite, and develop the story by sections or chapters. It takes time, but pays off in the end. I use a rubric for evaluating. If students are using the notebook for reflections or reactions to assigned texts, they are required to organize their ideas in written form and share their writing with the rest of the class. I evaluate these holistically. Hope this helps.

I use a folder and a composition notebook. The folder is where students keep their works in progress/completed. The composition notebook is where we take notes from mini-lessons and generate ideas.
