I currently work in a private high school as a computer teacher/technology specialist. Recently I started applying for jobs at public schools and colleges because in all honesty, I need the higher salary. With getting married about a year ago, there is a whole new set of responsibilities and expectations. Well I received an offer to work in the educational technology department of a university as one of the supervisors and will be involved with working with the faculty.

I will definitely miss the school events and the kids. Working with them has its moments, but many of them provided such a great experience.

This was my first job right out of college. Starting new in a new place is going to be difficult but hey...thats life..need to do what needs to be done.

Has anyone else stepped away from teaching? How have things been for you? What do you miss?

I am pretty sure you will be using your teaching skills in your new job, and I am sure they will serve you well! Congratulations, and I hope you enjoy your new career!

I am actually stepping away from teaching before I even started. I am going to be doing an after-school program, and technically teaching it, but it's going to be different than actually running a classroom. I plan to start teaching the next year though. At least my credential is done! =]

If you really miss teaching you could teach the clinics that they offer to the professors. Or volunteer to teach programs for visiting high school students.

Good luck to you! It sounds like an interesting job that will keep you plenty busy...but maybe with a little less work outside of contract hours.

It sounds like you'll still have your hand, albeit indirectly, in the education world. You're far from the only one on the forum who has made this adjustment. Much luck to you in your job and in your continued marriage. Stick around, please!

This was my last year teaching as well, in fact, I am now working at a college in administration. Right now, I really don't think I'll miss it, but if I do, I can teach any adult ed class I want. I, like you, was looking for a better salary, but more so, opportunities to advance. Best of luck to you!
