Here's the background: We moved to a new town 3 years ago after I got a job teaching 2nd grade. I got pregnant in Jan of that year and resigned because I was due in early Sept and have problems. We ended up losing that baby in May. For the past two years, I have been subbing and tutoring in my home district. There haven't been too many positions around here. I have applied for two here, one in a neighboring district, and 2 in another district. My hometown district has 6 positions that I'm qualified to apply for, but the town is an hour and a half away from where we are. Now, we have a house here, and love it. If I got one of these positions, then it would be hard to buy a house in the hometown because we've fallen on some hard times like the rest of the country. So I could apply for the positions and drive 5 days a week to work or I could stay with my dad Mon-Thur and then drive home on the weekends. Another thing, we don't really want to put our dd in the schools in the hometown.

What would you do? Would you still apply and drive that much?

I would apply and see what happens. You could always try to find someplace to rent and rent out or sell your house. I don't think I would drive that much, though, I'm applying to positions that are up to an hour and a half away, but would move about half an hour away if I did that so I had an hour drive. My limit on a one way drive is one hour.

Good luck, STG! Although, I hope something comes up for you that is a little closer.

I would apply too. My husband had a job for awhile that was 2 hours away. They gave him extra to rent an apartment. He came home on weekends. If you can stay with your dad that would be great. How does your hubby feel?

Apply and figure out what to do if you get a job once you get a job...does that make any sense?

Would dh and dd get along without you OK during the week? (Not to insult your DH's capabilities, but I've seen a few who can't cook, keep up with homework..) It would be hard not to be there at night for homework, errands, ballgames... But maybe it would be temporary... I did that same thing for summer school once with a combo sleeping there at a friend's house and driving home. It was tiring but I knew it wasn't forever.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

    I agree... apply.

Have a plan in case the adminstrators ask how you would swing the distance.

My hubby is the same way. He doesn't care where I work if I can find a position but my hubby is also one who can't do housework well. Only you know if it wouldn't hurt your family. Personally, I wouldn't apply for anything more than an hour away.

That is such a hard situation and a hard question. For me and our current situation, I wouldn't do it. But I have a job and dh has a good job, so we are lucky right now. But your situation is different, so you have to figure out what works for you.

I would definately apply. Then you can figure out what to do and how it will affect your family and if it is worth it. I don't know, STG. What a difficult decision!

I agree with matgrad. I had a friend that taught an hour and a half away. She stayed with a friend and would go home every weekend. After about two months she quit. Why? Because her husband would not do anything. She came home worked all weekend cleaning, cooking, and trying to repair the damage he had done. She quit after two months because she said it was either that or a divorce. She was exhausted. She became a stay home mother for ten years.

I think it depends on your spouse and family. Only you know for sure.

Well, you're well aware of my situation, but DH and I also don't have children yet. I would apply for the job if I were in your shoes, though.

    Good luck!!!

Not to be the only negative one in the bunch, but I don't think I'd go for it. I mean I guess you could, just to see what happens. But if it's that far, and you wouldn't even want your daughter in that school district, is it worth it? A drive like that to me would be horrendous. But maybe it's because I live in California and it would all be in bumper to bumper traffic for the most part...if you live somewhere that has no traffic, maybe it would be ok, but still that's a long time to be in a car. Even if you stay with your dad 4 days out of the week, I don't think I'd want to be away from my family more than half of every week.

Just my two cents, to give you a different perspective~! Good luck!! :)

Apply, see what happens, and try it out. We have a few teachers not coming back next year because they realized they couldn't do the commute every day. It happens.

MissWull-thank you. The traffic wouldn't be a problem because the drive is all country roads. I'm going to talk it over with my dh one more time to see what his opinion is, and go from there. I'll let you know what I decided.

One of our teachers lives 57 miles away from our school, and it takes her about 75 minutes to get to work (via freeways).

If she can do it, you can, too. Go for it, STG!!!

Well, after discussing it with my dh again, I have decided that I am not going to apply. I don't think he could keep up with the housework (though I didn't tell him that), and he brought up some good points, 1) he doesn't want to pack up and move, 2) there is a chance he could go overseas since he's in the National Guard, and 3) he would never put out daughter in that district.
