I currently have a website that I created for my classroom. Because I will proabably sub next school year (long story- I'm relocating to an area where they don't really hire, but love, love, love the town) I would like to create a website for substitutes. I want to do it in a way so that I can have pages of ideas, activities, advice, everything!!!! It'll be organized and easy to navigate.

what do you guys think? Is this something that you guys would be interested in?

Let me know. Also, if there is a site out there like this, I would like to know. So far, when I used to sub, I never really founda site like this. So, I had tons of bookmarks to pages that I needed as a sub.

I'd love one! There is a site trying to startup right now called Subtitute Teacher Magazine and it's pretty good. And I think you may be aware of the "other" one, and also ProTeacher has a sub area on their forum.

But, yes, I'd love to have another! Especially if it's a good one run by a good person!

Peachy, I think this is a great idea! I'm sure that subs are always looking for websites to help them make their experiences smoother.

I would really appreciate a site like that! I am just waiting for my fingerprints to clear and then I will officially be able to sub, so I need all the help I can get. (Especially since I'm still a student and haven't taken any teaching courses yet.)

    Great idea!

:) That would be really neat!!! I plan to get started on this as soon as I get over this horrid cold. Even if I do get hired, which is slim right now with the budget stuff in CA, I still plan to put a site out like this. I had so much fun putting my site together and people are still asking if my kinder site is still available (which it's not unfortunately, I took it down to make room for my fifth grade one). But, I would LOVE to put it on this site! What an honor. Thank you!!! Now I'm even more motivated to get started on it. Oh boy. Talk about pressure.....

That's a great idea. I'm still working out that sort of thing. What will be on it?
    So far I thought of:

    1. classroom management tips
    2. rules for subs to have in a classroom tips
    3. academic quick sponge ideas
    4. items for your sub bag
    5. how to be oranized tips
    6. lesson plans (Miss Frizzles idea)
    7. website links???
    8. books for subs to read- professional books????
    9. ?????

If there is something you would like to be on this site, let me know. I will try to add it.

    Great idea Peachy!

What about a time fillers area. I find that alot of the time things get out of hand because the students are finished with the assignment and have nothing to do. I use a couple things, but I've been subbing so long, the students know all my tricks!

I've been motivated to get started on this. I have 6 pages done plus my homepage. Whew! My eyes are sore. But, I'm finally getting this started. I plan to put this online through my school account so that you guys can critique it before it comes up on here.

I think this would be a great idea. One thought I have though. Would you be able to dedicate some space for the teacher who needs a sub? Sometimes I find myself pulling my hair out because I need to write out several different lesson plans depending on who will be subbing my class, which I may or may not know. Also, many teachers simply don't think things through when it comes to subs. Did I leave enough/too much information? Is there enough/too much work? Things like that.

Well, I do have a serious one. I would love an area where we could see samples of how to leave the note at the end of the day. I would love, love advice on how to suggest things that would be helpful from a subs point of view to a teacher without coming across as a know it all.

Just maybe some examples to go by from different instances.

Yes each state seems to have their own requirements. I started with CA since I live here. I wonder if there's some sort of source out there that would make my job easier.

I think trying to find the sub requirements for each state will be difficult for so many reasons. In Indiana, there isn't a state wide requirement for subs. Each school district can set up it's own requirments. My school corporation only requires that you pass a criminal background check. The corporation the next county over requires the background check, 60 credits hours and a sub seminar.

Instead of spelling out the requirements for becoming a sub, how about a search procedure for locating the requirements in a given area?

Well, except it doesn't necessarily work even state by state, as INteacher notes, but even more locally, so people need to be directed to check on the state level AND check with, say, the county office of education or even the local district.

Well, I provided a link to each states DOE and then mentioned that in many states, the requirements vary from district to district. So, I covered both basis at least.

Start with us....I'll look up the requirements in florida (though I think they change county by county) and send them to you. You can provide information on known states/districts as an example of what a potential sub might expect.
