I am a college student right now and just finished up all my finals. Today, there was an email from my sociology professor (just a 101 class) saying that we could check our grades on the University's database. I have a C (77%)!! I am so upset by this. I went to every class, participated, did all of the extra credit offered and, although I could have performed better on the tests, I still have a C. I asked her multiple times throughout the semester about my grade, and she said it would be a B! Even on the day of the final!!I sent the prof an email asking if there could be a mistake, but I doubt she will even bother to check. I'm worried about how this will affect me in my future? I'm so upset that I will have a C on my transcript forever. I have never had a C in my life!
no worries..as frustrating as it is a C can happen in your educational career. I have gotten a few and am a senior graduating with a (IMO) great gpa. Email the teacher and ask if it was a mistake and if it is not a mistake just be happy the class is over and concentrate on the great grades you will get next semester. Usually the prof at my school wont change grade so fighting would be a losing battle..esp if you didnt do well on the test - you can also check the syllabus to see if the points calculated right
I was also really worried about grades when I was in college. I graduated high school without ever having anything lower than an A, and then in college I started getting Bs. I did even end up getting one or two Cs. Still, when anyone looks at your grades, they're not going to care if there is one C. On my first job interview they looked at my transcripts and said-all As and Bs! Now if all your grades were Cs, then it might change a little. I interviewed my principal for my master's class, and I asked how important college grades were when they are hiring someone. My principal said---"If they hired based on grades, then I wouldn't have a job!" There are so many other things that are going to be more important in the long run.
Same here. I started back to school this semester after already getting my Masters in 2006. I'm tkg some prerequisites right now & this wk was finals wk & I know I've got a C for sure in a class! I don't like it either, but what are ya going to do!
You know, I've never had a job where they asked for my GPA or transcripts - just my diploma. It makes me wish I hadn't been so hard on myself over the occasional C. Granted, I worked for newspapers for 5 years, where your writing samples mean infinitely more than your report cards. By the time I came to teaching, I had lots of work experience (out of field) under my belt, so maybe that's why nobody ever asked - college was so long before.
Definitely email again if you don't hear from the prof. The main thing I would want to know would be 1) is it an error and 2) what should you focus on more in the future to earn a better grade. Then learn from it. I know a C can be upsetting, but there are just going to be those times and subjects, or particular teachers, when you have to celebrate the C. I remember taking a required drawing class and really struggling, doing all the assignments, going to every class, etc., but I got a C! I didn't even know what the guy was talking about 1/2 the time and I am not artistic! But I did celebrate that C and knew I earned it with all my might! I don't think a few C grades will have any affect on future jobs. If a place won't hire you due to having a few C's, truthfully, they are probably anal and you don't want to work there anyway. I was never even asked for transcripts or proof of diploma or anything else when I was hired here!
you know whats funny.. I was the same way you were.. used to getting A's and B's.. and then I realized after panicking over a few C's that nobody gives a hoot about your College GPA or Grades in teaching.. so I stopped worrying about it. I got mainly C's in my career.. especially in my degree area.. but I don't care.. C's get degrees.. and degrees are all that matter in the real world, not the grades that got them
I know when I made my first B in grad school I was really upset. I wanted to meet with the prof & protest it & did. Wow, what a mistake that was. I found out that when you're in a class that's subjective you're not going to win. Superintendents don't look at your grades. If it can't be fixed, focus on next semester, and just do your best. Some things you just have to accept. I do hope you get if fixed.
In college you have to be a good test taker because a lot of your grade point depends on it. Maybe you didn't do well on the final and got a C. Nonetheless, one C wont hurt you, like many people said, they don't look at your GPA at job interviews. However, that doesn't mean you can get all Cs and be okay, because Graduate school care about GPA. You need at least a 3.0 to apply, and if you get all Cs, that's a 2.0
I wouldn't worry too much about it. I had a couple C's and even an F (philosophy - I just didn't get it and my professor would help me at all)
Just an update: I emailed the prof and asked for her to make sure it was truly the correct grade. She emailed me back saying she had made a 50 POINT mistake on my grade. She fixed it and I actually got a low B in the class which I'm happy with. This teacher really should be let go. Earlier in the semester she called Alaska a country in TWO different lectures... But thanks for all the kind words and support! If I ever recieve a C in college, I definitely won't sweat it!
It's ironic that you started this post. I'm back in college & in one of my classes, my final grade was 79.5%, which is of course still considered a C... I had perfect attendance, which I think should count for something, so I emailed the professor to try to see if she could give me a B, I mean it's so incredibly close. I'm waiting to see what her reply is. All she can do is say Y or N, so at least I tried!
