Last year I did not have a word wall established and was going to add words as we used/learned/needed them. But so many students are in different places with writing that I feel like I should start with words already on the word wall and simply point to them as they ask for them or we learn them. How does everyone organize their word wall? I feel like it is an important tool but I have to show them how to use it or it is just wall space. HELP! Also, where did you get your words? How many words should I use and put up?
I only put sight words on my word wall. I put my vocabulary/spelling words for the week on our reading focus wall. My students use the sight word wall often during writing.
Instead of a word wall I am using a personal dictionary this year. I love it for a few reasons: 1. It doesn't take up any space. 2. It is a truer reflection to what kids will transition to later on. 3. It teaches them independence. They have to find the first letter of the word on their own and be ready before asking me to help, which means they often stretch those more difficult words out on their own. 4. It contains all the store words they need and finding and reading them on their own leads to remembering!
