Does anyone give a word of the week to first graders? I usually add a vocabulary word to their spelling test that goes along with the theme I am doing at that time. I have the students give the the definition to the word not write the time. I read that some teachers use a word of the week -how could I incorporate this -do you think it would be to much to use both?
    Thanks

I'd like to do that too.

A friend and 6th grade teacher used to do podcats of the vocabulary word of the week posted to his web site, but he said it just became too time consuming and the kids weren't accessing it.

I've seen upper elementary teachers do that with the word of the day calendar, but those words are too advanced for first graders.

Thinking outloud here... what if you used a primary dictionary. Once a week you thumbed through it "randomly" and picked a word. You could post the word on a poster with the definition. ???

We always did sparkle words but they weren't homework or anything like that. They were just words that we found randomly in books and we wrote them on a bulliten board with the def. the kids got a lot out of it.

we also gave them 5 sight words to learn each week. they went on the word wall every monday

I gave 5 words that we would use each week. Each day we would have a word of the day and the kids would use them in their writing journal. At the end of the week these words go up onto the word wall.

I would like to do this next year as well, and came across this post. Thought that I would bring it up again and see if anyone had any ideas about where to get such words that would be beneficial and interesting to the students?

One of my co-workers used the word of the week for character education, with her first grade class. She used words like initiative, honesty, common sense, integrity, and others. She would revisit the words, and review them throughout the year. I am going to do this for the upcoming school year. HTH :)

I would like to do that for the character trait of the week. But I'm just worried that I won't have enough words for the year. Do you know where your coworker finds these character traits?? I guess I could look them up.

No, I don't but I have her old lesson plans. I am going through them to pull the words off. I will PM them to you when I finish :).

TeachnRox, could you post them? I'd like to see the list, too.

I was just wondering, what she did with the word that week.

Did she talk about the definition? Have kids act it out? Read a book about it? Could you elaborate how you are going to do it, please? Did she leave the words up somewhere? How often did she review them and how?

Thank you very much! I want to do this and I'm just trying to work out how exactly I'm going to do it.
