I know I've been blabbing on another thread, but I have to brag to everybody! My middle son is auditioning for Canada's National Ballet School in the morning. We were able to come today for him to take the open class they offered, which he thought was an amazing experience. Tomorrow is the audition itself. I think I'm even more nervous than he is .

So, if you don't mind, keep him in your thoughts tomorrow morning. It would be a dream come true for him to go to the school next year (though a bittersweet moment for me...I'm not ready to send him off to a boarding school quite yet).

How soon after the audition will he find out?

Fingers crossed! I know he'll do a great job!

The national audition tour runs through mid-February. This was the only audition location in driving distance for me, and financially, I just couldn't afford to fly to Toronto for a later date. The audition is a two part process. I assume sometime after the last audition, we'll find out if he's invited to the summer intensive. The 5 week summer intensive program serves as part 2 of the audition process to decide who gets invited to the academic school year.

Thanks everybody! The audition is in two hours. We're having a lazy morning. It's beautiful outside. It's barely below freezing with a light coating of snow on the ground. We'll head out in about an hour an a half and then head home from there. I'll let everybody know how it went when we get home tonight. :)

Thanks for all your positive thoughts. Stuart didn't make it. They let us know right after the audition was over. He's devastated.

I am so sorry. Is there a chance he could try out again? Did they give him any feedback as to areas where he could improve and try out again?

It was a fabulous experience until the very last moment. He did impress the judges with his skill. Unfortunately, they declined to invite him to the summer intensive because his body is not proportioned well enough for ballet. They'd like to see him back in two years after adolescence has had a chance to kick in and possibly change his body proportions. That almost makes it harder to bear. MrsC, it was a VERY long drive home. My baby alternated between tears, anger, depression and semi-acceptance. He'll be okay. There are other ballet schools, and who knows how his body will change in the next few years.

Ah, so the door isn't closed entirely. He can't hear this now, probably - and, frankly, if he COULD hear this now, it would be astonishing - but he's gained a good deal of valuable insight into how this competition works and what he'll need to do for next time.

In the meantime, I wish I were near enough to offer him a handkerchief, something that needs to be broken into tiny bits, a stuffed critter or an appropriate analogue for one... and my congratulations that he carried himself well enough to impress the judges as he did, even though he hasn't got the body they want (yet).

I'm glad to hear that he received some positive feedback, not just a "thanks, but no thanks". A "please come back" is quite a positive thing, although it's hard for him to see that at this point. In those two years, if he continues to work hard, he can develop his skill to the point where his body type becomes irrelevant.

Ah, it's brutal to see your kids hurt and know you can't make it better.

    I'm so sorry.
