Ok, I mentioned that I might go to Williamsburg for my birthday. I think that's what I am going to do. I don't have any more sick days, so we are driving down right after work on Friday, but it is a 5 hour drive, so we won't get there until late. And we will have to leave by mid afternoon on Sunday to be home by a decent time. So who has been and what's good to see? Since I have limited time there, I want to make it worth our time. What about restaurants and hotels? Is it worth it to stay right in Colonial Williamsburg? I have looked over a lot of websites, but I need some first hand opinions about what must be seen.
We have only stayed on site at the Govenor's Inn (least expensive farthest out and The Woodlands (moderate) which is right next to the visitor's center. No complaints about either place. There are are a lot of restaurants at Market Square next to Colonial Williamsburg. We enjoyed sandwiches from The Cheese Shop there. Food For Thought gets very good reviews but is a few minutes away from Colonial Williamsburg. We have eaten in the taverns in Colonial Williamsburg. It's worth doing for the experience but they are expensive. When you get to the visitor's center to buy tickets be sure to have your teacher ID and ask for the discount. From there you can either take the bus or walk to CW. I like the walk. Its about 10 mins and takes you through Great Hopes plantation, which is a small farm setting. Leaving there you will come into CW near the Govenor's Palace. This is an add on to a basic ticket but worth it. They have been running deals on tickets where you get the second day free, not sure if that is still going on. Pick up "This Week", it tells which buildings are open on which days and the times for special programs. Don't miss the Randolph House, the Wythe House and the Capitol. Be sure to be around in the afternoon for Revolutionary City, a street play that takes place between the Raliegh Tavern and the Capitol. Have fun!
I really liked Colonial Williamsburg. I don't know about hotels because I was staying with a friend who lived about an hour from there. I did like eating at the Tavern and visiting the Apothecary. It was really interesting and I'm not usually into "history" stuff but I really enjoyed it.
Look for Thomas Jefferson! The actor is a Philly native and an old friend of mine. If you can, ask if he will sing a little something (he's an amazing baritone).
Just west of everything on Richmond are all the motels in the world plus many eating establishments. They gave me the teacher discount without anything (I have a very honest face ) Just visited last weekend and it is fantastic. You can walk it all. btw Visit the church on Sat.
I believe we stayed in the Woodlands and everything was fine. There were restaurants close by and in the town. You just reminded me how badly I want to go back!
We love Williamsburg and would like to incorporate it into out summer plans. Go on the Ghost Walk at night. It was so much fun!
