Well after two years of job searching I have finally landed a position. 200 resumes later and only 4 interviews in that time span, I was just about ready to give up. Starting in September I will be teaching 8th grade social studies in the middle school which I attended 14 years ago. Words cannot express how relieved and excited I am. The school is in a great district in NJ and I'll even be working with a good friend of mine. I never thought it was going to be this hard to find a job and now i feel like a little kid on Christmas morning. Good luck to everyone still looking, i hope you all find something in the near future.

    yay

I just got a position teaching third in NC! I'm leaving the state of NJ i can not believe it!

How long have you been trying?
I've been trying in NJ for two years..this was my first attempt in NC.
How many resumes did you send out?
It seems like I must have sent out hundreds (literally)!
    How many interviews?
I had a handful of interviews in NJ over the past 2 years all of which had a LOT of other applicants interviewing as well. I took a Kindergarten job in a Birth-Kindergarten school after graduation 2 years ago and have been doing that up until now while continuing to hunt for the perfect public school job.
This was my first NC interview.

I can not believe I am actually doing this! I am so excited though!!! YAY

I just got a position with the department of education as part of their school effectiveness division.(instructional coach type thing) I knew I wanted to change jobs but this is only the second resume I sent out! This will be my sixth year in public education, 8 years if you count developmental preschool.

I just got hired as a kindergarten teacher at a private Christian school last Friday! I was/am beyond excited because...

    a. I've wanted to be a teacher all my life.
    b. The school is AMAZING.
    c. I went to school there, K-8 (biased, much? naaah...)
    d. I don't have to stress about where I'm working anymore!

Congrats to everyone else who knows their employment situation for next year and good luck to everyone else still looking!

Two years ago (after trying since 2004), I had given up hope trying to find a job in Wisconsin, so with help from my hubby I was able to get a job in Florida.

However, I've still be trying to get a job in Wisconsin and of today, I have sent out 354 applications/resumes in Wisconsin and only have had 2 interviewsn which was in 2006.

So far this spring I've applied to 97 different schools/school districts in Wisconsin and haven't even recieved call or rejection letter.

I've been praying that 2008 would be the year my husband and I could relocate back to Wisconsin, but it seem the chance will not come.

I would have thought with 2 years experience full-time teaching now would at least get me an interview....

And congratulations to everyone else who is lucky enough to know this early that they are going to have a position come the next school year ( I think it's going to be wonderful to have the whole summer to prepare and relax without having the stress of "will i have a job for next year? ugh)

FINALLY I get to post here!!!! I've been reading interview questions for over a year now!

How long have you been trying? July 2006 - March 2007 was half-hearted; April 2007 - November 2007 had a little more agressiveness; December 2007 - now was 100% full-out going for it!

How many resumes did you send out? Did all but 2 online. I applied to probably a dozen school districts, sent out probably 20 separate emails to principals of desired schools, and applied for 50+ specific positions.

How many interviews or job fairs? 1 job fair and 2 interviews in 2007; 4 job fairs and 2 interviews this spring. All job fairs included multiple sit-down interviews, btw.

What general geographic area? North Texas

And of course what grade and/or subject? 7th grade math.

I want to add that I'm an alternative certification candidate, which has not worked in my favor. Thanks to the interview thread, I was always able to impress the interviewer. Today's job offer was for 7th grade math in a district not too far from home (not my first choice, but a close second). I pre-registered for their job fair, was interviewed by someone from the administration building first, then sent to be interviewed by the principal. He offered me a contract on the spot (after our interview, of course).

I'M THRILLED BEYOND BELIEF. I'm so relieved this part is over and I can finally begin planning my very own classroom!!!

    Michele

Well, I haven't posted in this job thread too much lately. I'm glad to hear everyone's good news about getting a job. I decided to stop my job search. I decided to go back to school and brush up on my science. I will, one by one, take the CSET tests in science. The first two are general science (covering earth, plant, cell, motion, astronomy, etc). The third is what I plan to specialize in. Still haven't decided but I think biological or earth (or can I take both???). So, one day, I will post on here that I got a science position. Hopefully......

Congrats again to everyone who has their job lined up for the 2008-2009 school year! I'm still on the search for mine. Arizona is so slow it seems like on interviewing and hiring. Ugh! I'm having a hard time being patient. I've also been trying to contact HR to see what schools are hiring since they are so general on their websites and I don't get answers. They say, if all your stuff is turned in then the principals have access to your information. But I want to know the exact schools who are hiring and what positions they are hiring so I can contact them and let them know I'm interested. Sorry...I just needed to vent some. Thanks!

While the principals may technically have access to your information, they're going to follow up on any immediate leads first and THEN go to the database to fill in any holes that remain (and of course you already know that, hence the vent). I can totally understand why you would be frustrated! Maybe you could just send a letter of interest to the schools you would most like to work for, since HR is being so uncooperative? I don't know what the hiring process is like in Arizona, but around here a letter of interest would be the way to go because positions (at least the desirable ones) are filling quickly or have already been filled. Good luck! :hugs:

How long have you been trying? Since January of this year.

How many resumes did you send out? I automated most of the search using online search sites, but there were a couple of local career fairs that did not do very much for me. All told, probably about 25 formal applications, 40 districts interviewed and investigated to date.

How many interviews or job fairs? To date, 8.

What general geographic area? Bay Area, San Fran, CA

And of course what grade and/or subject? High School Math

This is a conditional post, since I haven't signed any contracts yet. The one letter of intent is from a district that doesn't offer health insurance, and the deal is strange. They don't know where they are going to place me, and want to put me in the school "sight unseen".

I'm holding out for a few others that are going to get back to me, but I wonder if I'm just spinning my wheels. It's stressful because the one (albeit bad) deal might expire while I wait for these other guys to walk away from me. I'm hoping a persistent follow-up takes care of it, but we'll see.

In CA it's not easy, there was just a 10% budget cut in Ed, and everybody's circling, IMHO. Any other californians with other experience?

Sounds very exciting!!! I'd say go with both biology and earth science--- schools always need bio, but if you can teach other sciences (and I don't know of too many earth science teachers actually) you'll be able to get hired alot faster!! Congrats! :2up:

How long have you been trying? I tried searching while I was student teaching last fall, but did not become fully engaged in the process until January.
How many resumes did you send out? 20 school districts, mostly online applications, within 5 of those districts I had to submit a fax to the schools with the open positions(which ended up being about 25-30 schools) How many interviews or job fairs? 5 official interviews and 1 job fair with 10 brief/screening interviews
And of course what grade and/or subject? At first, any Elementary Grade but...I was a top candidate for Third Grade!!!

I haven't signed a contract yet, I'm still thinking about it. I have a meeting with the Superintendent on Monday to go over the contract. I'm super excited!!!! I've made a pros vs. cons list for the school and there are way more pros than cons!!! My husband is very supportive and excited for me too. I want to take the job but, I'm nervous that "something better" might come up. The school is very nice and up-to-date, and the staff I interviewed with seemed very friendly and they laughed at some of the jokes I made. I felt a positive energy when I was there and I just want to make sure that I make the right decision.
    YEAH!!!!! :D

Mrs. Math, judging by what you posted I think you already have the "something better" position. Unless there was a particular school/district you were holding out for, I'd say go for it! Congrats! :)
