I have almost 200 students. Let's say I reach half on the first call, and have a 3 minute conversation with each. Then consider 1 minute for the other half I left a message for. Then contacting all of those a second time, and this time half answer. In total, I've spent 10 hours on the phone. Absolutely not.

I understand they don't want us congregating, but I wish we could just go work by ourselves in our classrooms for an unlimited amount of time. My classroom even has it's own exterior door. I wouldn't even have to walk down the hall.

I'm in my classroom alone making up packets to send home. We have a cleaning crew working all day long in the high traffic areas (bathrooms, etc) although I'm using the bathroom in my classroom which I have wiped down several times. I bring Clorox wipes with me, gloves and hand sanitizer when I go make copies. The halls are usually pretty empty so It's not like we're hanging out together.

I see this working only if you have a limited number of students. Say 10-12. Otherwise, that's just nuts. And you have to use your own personal phone. No way would I do that with 200 students.

Seems this will be our new norm when schools fully open back up.

I have 22 students and it's definitely doable (contact twice a week). It actually doesn't take that long. I could see it working with 50 students, considering how long it takes me with 22. I would say the upper limit would be 100 students and then I'd be working just doing this probably 6 hours 5 days a week.
    200 students? No.

Admin is there, I think maybe one secretary per day, custodial staff is definitely there. We can go in whenever, but we have to sign up on a spreadsheet ahead of time to make sure there aren't multiple people in one area, and then the custodians have to re-clean the area after we leave.

How many staff are tested per week at your school?

Our schools are closed to all except the cleaning crews (and to be honest, I don't think any are actually going in, I don't think the district has the manpower for the schools to get completely disinfected as planned). Even the principal is not allowed to enter.

I went in for my assigned 15 minute time slot this morning. The principal had to keep strict track of times in and out and ensure that we entered one at a time and at a distance. We were instructed to only grad essentials and couldn't make copies, etc. There was hand sanitizer to use as we entered and as we left. It was odd seeing people and not engaging in the typical chitchat; there simply wasn't time, even from a safe distance. It was so hard to know what to get.

I had a half hour to get my gear last Friday. Thankfully, I had a personal stash of gloves (I have a latex allergy) and a ton of Clorox wipes in my room. That was the last day any of us had access to the building, including the principal.

Week 2 done- Some progress shown: I did not snap at anyone. If I can keep that up, I should be good for 14 years at least. I remembered to breath and laugh.
I ate lunch w/ the person I usually eat with only on the phone. 4 out of 5 days though we were interrupted by incoming calls and had to get off the phone before 30 mins.
Our district says we work contract hours, but what they want is taking me 11- 12 hours a day. I don't even take breaks except part of a lunchtime.
I get too busy to consider it. WT_ is wrong w/ me? My friend is able to do it in 9 hours. I started off bent and determined on Monday to just stop at 4 whether I was done or not as long as I had the essentials turned in and done.
Monday: I made it off by 4:45 which was good enough. I start at 6 AM because I just have been waking up then, grabbing my coffee, and doing what paperwork I can in the quietness. Tuesday I was able to get off before 5.
It got progressively worse throughout the week. ( I got slammed w/ incoming assignments.) I wasn't getting done until 6-6:30. My balance is so not good right now. I wish I could just :Stop it!
At least my attitude is better when it comes to anger outbursts and feeling stressed. I have eaten a bit better.
I think I figured out on Friday though what to do to gain more balance. Any email coming in after 2 (except from an admin) is going to have to wait until the next day. It was good too that last week I took the weekend off and am doing the same now.
You guys who are being told to Take care of yourselves are so lucky! We are slammed w/ "accountability and major documentation."
My school year, this year, was so easy until this happened.

None here and I was stunned a couple of days ago when admin suggested we stop by at various times to get something done. In our state, we are labeled as essential workers still.
I guess they can do that, but I think it is crazy.

I’m not understanding why you’re not understanding. There appears to be some disconnect here.

I very clearly said: “For example: “What steps were necessary for computing the following derivative?“ Read a little bit above the solution.

I made a typo when I typed the term cos^(7x). You can infer what I meant.

If you read my explanation of the solution below the question, you see that it was correctly stated elsewhere twice. Come on, now.

Ah, well, I wasn't making the connection between “What steps were necessary for computing the following derivative?“ and what I thought was the beginning of the question "Consider the following..." because f(x) isn't the derivative. I thought these were intended to be separate questions.

What steps are necessary for computing the derivative of the following:
    f(x) = 5sin^2(7x) + 5cos^2(7x)

    Or

    Consider the following: f(x) = 5sin^2(7x) + 5cos^2(7x)
What steps are necessary for computing the derivative of f(x)?

Yes, I did figure out the typo. I might have been going a bit overboard given I didn't see a question.

After spring break we are all to go to work on Tuesday. This was confusing because an email said we would get a schedule so that we're not all there at the same time. I specifically asked, and they said we are on regular work time on Tuesday, although it's actually not mandatory. One teacher who lives in the mountains said she can do everything from home and she has no reason to come in and the said ok. It is also not a directive that we stay all day or even that we go in? So it's confusing.

But, we do have to prepare packets for 2 weeks and have students pick them up Thursday or Friday. And then they bring it back in 2 weeks and by that time we must prepare their last packet, which is for 3 weeks work.
During this time we are allowed to go in but we can also just stay at home. We can call students from home like we are doing now, we can do it from school, we can do Zoom or other video chat with them from school or home, all this is very flexible and I like that.

I'll go in Tuesday and Wednesday for a few hours because I will need to print out and prepare their packets, and bring home all their files and answer keys. Other than that I might go in to school if I need to, if anything, in 2 weeks to pick up their work they're dropping off.

We were told the entire school has been cleaned and sanitized and they will continue to that every night.

With over 1,000 people dying a day (think of 9-11 twice a week) and over 30,000 people getting COVID-19 cases a day and climbing, I really think you are putting yourself at risk by going in to school. Unless you are in one of the 8 states that don't have a stay at home policy, your P is bending the rules. I don't doubt that she can get away with it, but if it was me, I'd find any other option than going into school.

I don't think it is fair for you to risk your health (and possibly the lives of others) to make copies for students. I am a teacher who bends over backwards for students, parents, and my principal. When my health and the health of others is concerned (especially with the most dangerous virus in over 100 years) that is where I draw the line. If your P is really dedicated to the packets then I would download the files at home or make pictures, and then have a company such as Mailform or another company to mail the copies that you upload from home. Of course, this is at the school's expense. Oh, these companies aren't cheap, but compared to getting COVID-19 and passing it on to others...it is a bargain. Stay safe.

Our admin is giving very mixed messages too. Certain things that supposedly need to be done, can not be done on the crappy laptops or home computers we got. I may have to go in there soon too, but am not looking forward to it. You made me curious of the stay at home policy. I am going to go look to see if 1 of the 8.

The 8 states that don't have a stay at home policy as of this morning are:
(I am a little less sure about Iowa)

    1. Arkansas
    2. South Carolina
    3. Wyoming
    4. Utah
    5. Nebraska
    6. North Dakota

    8. Iowa ?

Thank you! I guess we are on orders to stay home, but teachers were said to be essential workers by the governor which means we have to work.
Our district has had us working our butts off from home IF you can get everything done there, but something came up recently that most computers do not have access to unless you are at work. GRRRR! I am going to put it off as long as I can.

I totally agree with you. I'm in California, one of the first states that ordered stay at home. Now thinking about this, I am surprised they us going into work, but at the same time I just don't see how else it could be done.
Because I teach independent study, we have 4 teachers in 1 classroom (4 in another) and then 5 other teachers who have their own classrooms because they mostly teach seattime classes.
They ask us if one of our teacher could volunteer and work from another empty classroom, so now it's 3 teachers, not 4, bt not sure how much difference it will make.

Luckily we have our own printer, so although it will be a lot of paper and ink wasted, we can just print them from our des, and not line up at the ONLY printer our school has!
Our students don't get the same packet, it's personalized for each one based on the courses they're taking.
I'm not really worried, but I know it's a risk. I will go i n at 7:30 am and hopefully most teachers will wait.

I will contact my P and ask what happened to the schedule they were supposed to give us. For example the 4 teachers in our room could go in at 7:30, another at 9:30, and 11:30 and 1: 30. Even if we stay later than the 2 hours our contact would still be somewhat cut down.

I have had MANY 30 minute calls in 2 weeks. Certain parents want me to tell their kids what they are supposed to do and encourage them to cooperate with their parents. ( Tell them to straighten up and show their parent some respect.)
Some kids are refusing to do something they love to do at school w/ their parents. ( Kids in 3-5th grades.) A computerized program.....I have heard some screaming all out fits kids are throwing in the background.
Kids screaming at their parents....Some of these kids were good students even. I never would have guessed they would be like that at home w/ some.
The tables have turned. I have spent years asking for parent support. Now parents are calling me a lot. I can't even imagine being responsible for 200. I don't know how you could even possibly do it w/ 24 hrs a day.

Linguist, I can see your thinking this through, and that is good. Remember, it isn't your job to come up with a solution to this problem. That is nice, helpful, and P probably appreciates, but you should be able to say "I don't feel safe going on campus anymore. I wish to help students from home." To be honest, that is what I would do. They are estimating nearly 4,000,000 people to be infected with COVID-19 (resulting in about 100,000 deaths) in the next month. FEMA just asked for 100,000 body bags. You are far more important than some worksheets.

California has a strong union. Couldn't you contact them? Not to get them directly involved in your situation, but to find out if you are fully protected if you choose to stay at home. Maybe the union can get on it and make sure they (or principals) can make a blanket statement that no teacher needs to enter a school campus at this time.[/QUOTE]

well, I could stay home, They said we had to go in and everything, but as I mentioned before one teacher who lives in the mountains, and she's a bit older asked if she could do everything from home, if it would be a problem, getting paid, etc. They said no problem.
But the only way I can see her doing this if all her kids have internet at home and she's doing everything on Google classroom. I don't see how that would b e, we each have at least a few that just don't have it.

So I don't think I have any other choice than to go in. No one will print them and prepare them for me.

I'm a preschool teacher ( one year olds) and we are still open, But are supposed to practice social distancing ( Yeah right that works with toddlers ) and only 10 to a room, that includes the teacher.
We are deemed essential, but I dont agree with us staying open but thats just my opinion.

Wow! I am so sorry! I can't even imagine 9 one year olds in the same room! Fingers in their noses and mouths! I'd think 9 would be illegal even before this virus.
I think you might consider this if you can afford it: Find someone who has 1 little one that needs to work who can afford to pay you decently. It'd decrease your exposure. I feel bad for the parents who have to leave their 1 yr olds w/ 8 others in a room too. Wow!
