How do you handle the storage of students' notebooks, folders and textbooks?

I've always had them stored in their desks but organization and sufficient space are usually a problem. This year, I'm considering having them stored elsewhere in the room where helpers can distribute them when needed. I just wonder if I'd have enough space in my room to accommodate all these different books and folders. Who has had success with this and what kinds of tips can you suggest to make sure it runs smoothly?

The items that the students use daily go in their desks. This would be their reading books, math books, science books, reading workbook, and science workbook. They also keep three composition books and two folders (privacy folders) inside their desks. I tell them they should have two sides of their desks. The hard side and soft side. All the textbooks and comp books (hardback books) go on one side and all the folders and workbooks (softback books) go on the other. Thier pencil case goes in the middle.

They keep their binders and other books that aren't used daily (test prep books, social studies and health books, science activity books) in their cubbies.

I sit my kids in groups of four and each group is a color (red, blue, green, and yellow) and I have buckets in each color that I got from the dollar store. I have them keep some of their items (take home folders, catch up folders, agenda books) in their buckets, which sit on top of their cubbies. When they need to get something from their bucket, I have one person from the group (the table captain) get it.
