Arrange them like a) or b)?
When I did this last year I did:
I allowed my students to sit where they wanted to when my desks were in quads. I now use a horseshoe type set up (about 14 desks) with the remaining 5 desks in the middle. I love it as do the kids.
same as nklauste
c) none of the above
I group based on who can get along with each other. Plus, I have 13 boys and 2 girls so grouping based on sex is out of the question.
I have 10 boys in one pod and 10 girls in the other. It's worked surprisingly well... so far.

I group them:

Several years ago, I let my students arrange themselves for the last 3 days before Christmas break. I set out some guidelines--no one could be excluded, work still needed to happen--and let them go to it. I ended up with one group of 16 boys and one of 14 girls; it worked so well we kept the arrangement for about 3 weeks after the holiday.
Well this year it's
...but I have 24 boys so that doesn't help.
When I've had mixed classes in the past I try and do some variation of
Keeping in mind who works well together and mixing up different ability levels.
This worked best in my experience.
I try to split up the discipline problems and then try to place some high, middle and low achievers in each group.I do find it helps to change groups after a six week period.

I group mine by ability. I am the reading teacher and have the sped cluster for two hours and then a gifted cluster. I had attempted to do it by one high, med high, med, low in each group but it made it difficult for the two sped teachers to walk around and help since they weren't grouped together. We have 4 autistic children and then 7 ld kids who are at a first grade level. When I had them split, the ld kids were not focusing because they need to literally be guided on what to do, and it wasn't always possible for me to help when I pull small groups back, We did it this way and it actually works surprisingly well because I am starting to see my low ones move up. I am able to tailor my time to each group for each activity and because I have a small room I actually go to the table and join the group. It has worked for me.
