I am first grade this year and originally planned on starting the first day. My colleague doesn't start until the 2nd week because they have a lot of routines to develop. I'm anxious about starting it and think it's also a very important routine for them to develop! When do you personally start to introduce it?

Lynn did it go well for you? I don't want it to be overload, but I'd kind of like to introduce it on the first day.

It went fabulous! Granted, I didn't do it by the book... I did do the first 20 or so days, however after that I tweaked the program to fit my needs (we have to do literacy stations).

However, the beginning is mainly management.

I will be doing things differently this year - but not because anything went wrong last year.

I teach K and I'll probably start a few weeks into school. I would typically start sooner then that (I started right away last year in 1st grade) but I'm in a new school which hadn't even heard of the program...I got to explain it all in my interview! :D I also haven't even gotten in to my classroom to see what materials I have to do the program.

I will probably start the 2nd or 3rd day of school this year. Last year I started the 2nd week because it was my first year and I didn't want to be overwhelmed. Our first grade also started doing Daily 5 last year (well most of them) so most of my kids are familiar with it. I am hoping to be able to start full rotations much sooner than last year because of this. Hmmm now you have me thinking, maybe I will start the first day. Just talking about the ways to read a book and the basic stuff.

I start the first day. It goes very well with all the other routines you need to teach. It is just another routine you want them to learn.

I start teaching the 3 ways to read the third week of school. I teach it for an entire week, and we begin building stamina the fourth week of school.

I started the daily 5 late into the school year last year so I can't help you with your question, but I plan to discuss it the first week and begin it the second week. We'll see what happens.
