Here teachers go back on June 30 and students start Aug. 7
State law in Michigan is that school starts after Labor Day.
Teachers start Aug. 13, students start August 15.
It never made sense to me, but it seems southern state schools start back earlier and get out earlier-- but economically it doesn't seem sound as August is hotter in the South then June.
Does anyone know why there is this difference between Southern and Northern schools? Did it originally have more to do with harvest times of certain crops?
Texas School Start Schedules
Okay a lot of districts in Texas switched to later start days and now have similar schedules again-- i.e most of the districts in the Houston area will be on the similar schedules-- I suppose like districts in the DFW area too. It's because TX State legislature passed a law regarding something about students not starting so many weeks before Labor day. This "law" about Labor Day starts is similar to other States' laws that have schools starting after Labor Day- I find northern communities, due to needing summer help from college students due to the tourism industry really benefit from later school start dates. Maybe there's more to it than that though.
So, anyway this year, districts in Texas changing their start dates had to struggle to find ways to "stretch" our teacher checks.
I was thinking about relocating to teach in another state where family lives-- I don't have close family in Texas-- anyway when my brother in TN asked me to move up by him- I said not this year because TN schools start earlier than Texas and that would mess up my long summer this year.
Which States start the very latest-- I think I want to apply there 1) gives me more time to find a jod and 2) EXTENDS MY SUMMER!!
I know that is why we have the summers off is because of harvesting season. As for the dates, our state mandated we couldn't start before August 25th. So now we have to start later which means we get out earlier because we can only be in school 180 days. Not sure why August 25th but that is what they chose. I know it had something to do with parents wanting more vacation time. I belive the dates did coincide with harvesting.
we also have air conditioned schools
I was going to say the same thing. It doesn't matter how hot it is outside, we have air conditioned schools.
Wow! You all still have weeks left in your summer vacations! Teachers go back on July 12th, the kids start on July 19th.
Are you a year round school??
Miss Texas what day did you get out of school? The kiddos last day was Jun 7th, that is why we don't start back till August 27th.
Yes, I work in a year round district. The students got out May 24th I believe.
Our year round starts back July 9th
I was thinking the same thing
The kids start on the 20th of August and teachers start back on the 14th of August.
But this is summer:
I don't shave
I take a shower on Saturday night whether I need it or not,
I go on the computer whenever I want
I go to the casino whenever I want (or money allows)
Kids are in OH with grandparents
Wife is out of town
Just me and the dog
Gosh school doesn't start until Aug 14
What will I do!
Fishing? is there any fishing in TX right now?
Teachers here go back the 13th of August and then next Monday kiddos come back.
Me- August 13th
The Students- August 20th
Our starting date is at least two weeks later than usual. Last year, I believe the kids started the 9th.
Back before we had air conditioning in our schools, we started Thursday of the next to the last week of August every year. With that, we still dismissed some days due to heat. (The room across from me reached 108 one day!)
Now all the schools have air conditioning, but there are still a few complaints because it's so hot on the busses in the afternoons.
One of the main reasons that we start so early is due to state testing. We have a certain amount of content that has to be covered by the second week of April. In our area we miss a LOT for snow . . . 9 to 26 days in the 14 years I've worked here. We also get a week off in October, two weeks in December, and a week in April--unless we have to use it for make-up snow days.
We tend to get a few students in the week after labor day. They're moving in from an area where they don't start until late August, early September, and they are amazed that we have been in session for a month!
It's a 186 day contract (working days)...5 pre 1 post and regular school days/report card days. During the pre week, we participate in in-service activities, prepare our rooms, meet with team members and planning.
Where in Arizona? I am in Bullhead City and we start back July 27th. Open House is Aug 2nd and the kiddos come back August 6th. I teach 4th grade and am a first year teacher. I am lucky, I can get into my classroom next week.
Teachers start Aug. 27, students Aug. 28
I'm a new teacher so I report on Aug. 9th, students come on the 21st?

I don't mind going back so early. We get 2 days for Labor Day, three in Oct.(fall break), a week in Nov., 2 weeks in Dec/Jan., a week in Feb., and a week in April.
Shoot yeah, Irishdave! I could fish from my front porch (and I am not on lake-front property, normally!)
I go back to work on August 15th or 16th and the kiddos start on August 27.
Teachers go back Monday, August 14, and students start Thursday, August 17.
We can go into our classrooms over summer, which is good because the three days before school starts is full of meetings and professional development. I'd love it if we had more paid time to work in the rooms.
I am in Yuma
sept-5th for the kids
I have a little bit longer than you all but not that much!
Aug. 9 for us

I'll be a new teacher in a different district next year- as a new teacher I have to report 1 week earlier than other teachers-- Aug 20, students start back after Labor day.
Funny thing is, becuase I'm switching districts, I'm actually getting an additional week of summer-- which is nice, but also means longer to wait for pay- ugh.
Teachers on Long Island tend to start after Labor Day. (But, hey, our summer didn't start until late June.)
We do freshman orientation the week before Labor Day though, so we start then.
Teachers start back on August 2, 2007 and students begin on August 8, 2007
Technically, teachers must report on Aug. 6 but I'm a new teacher so July 30- Aug 3 is new teacher orientation across the county. But the students come on the 10th for open house and then start school on the 13th.
Wow- we start back so late. We got out June 15th. We go back September 4th for inservice and then kids come Sept. 6.
We are out before Mday and start after Lday.
But we do not have any spring break or long weekends.
usually 5 school days at x-mas
wow BMAK, where are you in GA?
Wow, sounds like fun. I'm interested to know what district that is though. It seems quite different from the traditional schedules.
Teachers start back this Friday (July 20th). Students come back next Friday (July 27th).
We got out June 28th and return July 18th for preservice days. Kids return on the 23rd. So long summer! (yes, we are year-round.)
