Got class lists today and found I have one section of science with 36 students in it. I don't even have 36 chairs! Definitely not condusive to laboratory safety. Will have to get this figured out with guidance and principal tomorrow.

My largest class is 32. That's very large for a language immersion program. Last year my largest was 22.

I won't know for another week-- and that's if someone can get in to get me my stuff while I'm in the hospital.

But there are 42 desks in my homeroom. And I've had as many as 45 before.

Our limit is 33. I don't have class lists yet so I don't know if I have any that are over or not. Last year I was very lucky and almost all of my classes were under.

At my old school my honors chem class was 36 - it was impossible to do labs. There were only 24 places and people were allover each other. Admins didn't do anything about it when I tried to explain that it was unsafe.

We're capped at 38, but 5% of the classes for any given course can be at 42. Right now my biggest class is 38, and if it stays that way when we start on Thursday, I'll be thrilled!

I have two at 33. But I also have classes of 14, 17, and 23. I wish they could balance that out a little.

We are supposed to cap at 25, but I have 27 desks in my classroom.

My biggest class this year is 24.

36 is our cap and almost every class does have 36.

We have new classes to group low performing students together and they have generously decided to cap them at a low 32 students.

My largest class this year isn't bad at all, w/ 22 students. Last year I had a class of 29 during the last period of the day and it was often mayhem. But 45 high-school students? :eek:hmy: How is that even possible? I couldn't *fit* 45 students in my classroom.

One of my friends won the award one year; she was the only one I've known who had 46 kids. It was a Precalculus class.

And 45 kids really is not a big deal, at least not in my school. 3 rows of 7, 3 rows of 8.

God Bless you guys with 40+ students. I teach science and have no idea how I coudl safely get labs done with that many students.

My 9th grade classes have 24 students and my elective classes range from 25-29 students.

My largest is 30, but some teachers have more than that. And we do indeed have teachers with classes of 15, and other classes of 30. But it's not so simple as "just balancing it out".

I helped build the schedule this year, and the reason that stuff happens to due to the student schedules themselves. The reason a kid isn't in your smaller class but got shoved into a class of 33, is because the other time(s) your class was offered conflicted with something in the kids schedule. Trying to organize all that was a nightmare this summer, but I now have a very good understanding of how scheduling works, and why some classes end up huge, while others end up tiny.

This post made me feel somewhat better . . . I've been freaking out about my science class with 32 kids! My math classes have 27-29. Last year my largest class was 24. Still nervous, but no way would I want to do 40!

My largest class is 27 right now, but it seems to be the class full of athletes and smart-mouthed girls. Took me 25 minutes to take attendance Friday because I had to stop and take one out into the hall, make another one sit in her seat, make another one stop sitting on top of his desk, listen to the second one throw a fit about needing a pass to the nurse RIGHT NOW... it was awful. I've never experienced the level of disrespect that is in that class.

It especially tees me off that I teach two other sections of that class, one has 5 students and the other has 12 students. It's just ridiculous.

We have a cap at 34... I'm gonna assume my classes will be maxed out. They won't go lower than 30 that's for sure. One year I had 12... what a blessing that was!

This year? 21. I have classes anywhere from 16-21 in 7,8, and 9th grade English. :D which is great, let me tell you, and one of the biggest reasons I love teaching in a small school. Though last year, when I taught Art, I had 36 in one class, which was a disaster...

I'm lucky - I get much smaller classes. With the exception of my study hall (which they now have down from 51 to 27..yay!), my largest class is 17.

Wow. Our cap is 30. My largest class is 25, but I have 21 boys and 4 girls in that class which can be a bit challenging. After seeing all of your posts of around 30-50 I think I need to "man up" and quit being a baby. LOL! I teach 1 section of PE and I have 52 students in that class, but I have an aide, so I guess that doesn't count.

187 students? How many sections do you teach? Oh my!!!

My largest class is 29. I previously taught all the 10th grade honors English classes and now teach all the 12AP Lit classes, so my numbers depend entirely upon the number of students taking it (60 will give me 2 large classes; 75 will give me 3 reasonably sized classes; 90 will give me 3 large classes; etc.). Then my journalism class tends to be small but depends entirely on student interest (usually in the low 20s). My only wildcard is the non honors/AP English class I also teach, which just depends on the master schedule and luck.

Some teachers have over 30 students, but that's the exception, not the rule. I admire those of you with many more students than that!

Ah, the joys of teaching in an alternative school... :D

My biggest class has 13, my smallest class has 8. I only have 4 classes a day.

The traditional schools in the district all have an average of 29.

This year, 24....but 8 of them have IEPs and 3 others are behavior problems. OUCH

Last year, my biggest was 31 but it was all well behaved juniors and seniors. I had to slow it down a LOT for the class size, but management wasn't an issue.
