I'm just wondering how you call in for a sub. We have to call our Principal, which I don't like. I hate calling her cell phone so early (even though she told us to call anytime, no matter what), and I hate that she asked me if I had a fever the one time I called out. Maybe I'm too sensitive.
If it is during school hours, we turn our absence paper into our secretary and she inputs it into our online system. If it is after hours, we input it online ourselves and leave our absence number on the secretary's voicemail at school. I usually try to get my absences in the day before, as our school has several regular subs that are wonderful and rarely available at the last minute, so we all try to snatch them up. It obviously isn't possible to know in advance all the time, and I've had to put in my absence several times online.
We have to call our principal too. I hate calling her. She always makes me feel like I am lying. (and I'm not!) Then after that, we have to put the sub request in either online or we can call in to a special automated phone number thing but I always do it online.
We call a sub coordinator at central office. After hours we leave the information on voicemail. During the day we talk directly to the person. We can also send emails for things we know about ahead of time.
We use the AESOP system, so the computer finds the subs for us. We used to have to call a sub caller, and I always felt guilty when I did that.
We have to find our own sub..we have a list and I hear it sometimes is very difficult to find one....then we call our P. We have to leave a message b/c he does not answer that line and let him know why we aren't coming in and who the sub is. I wish we only had to call the secretary. Being a first year teacher I luckily (knock on wood) have not had to call a sub yet, but It cant be much fun trying to find one when you are throwing up!
We don't have normal subs. Other teachers have to cover the classes. So if we call in sick, the secretary then has to scrounge around that day and find teachers who have breaks or preps or lunches who can cover individual classes. It's NOT a good system.
We tell our P. She's responsible for making sure there is coverage and knowing who is there. She gets the secretary to help with the sub calling. She should know what is going on in our school. SHe has a big calendar book that has all the details of workshops, trainings, parent meetings, other meetings, absences, etc. She can tell you where everyone is at any time.
We either call in or go online to an automated system. We can either request certain subs or just be assigned one.
We have to call our P, and I hate doing that early in the morning. He lives with his elderly mother, so she ALWAYS picks up the phone, which makes me feel extremely guilty at 6 in the morning. Also, there's just no hiding that slightly disappointed and annoyed "OK, I'll see what I can do". Luckily, we don't have to find our own subs.
We call the AP's office at or just after 7:15 am. We sub internally, so someone from the "On Call" list will be put on to cover each period I teach. I've never had any response other than "I hope you feel better!"
I've only called out once, and my P made me feel soooo guilty. I don't I'll ever call out again unless I'm practically crawling on the floor (which I did when I had Lyme's disease  that was awful!)
Well, now we aren't getting subs because of the financial crunch. Assistants are being pulled to fill spots where a sub is needed. When we know in advance that we will need a sub, we have to request leave via email on the device where we clock in daily. I don't know what you call it. We log in with our fingerprint! There is a tab you click to request leave. If it is approved, the principal arranges for an assistant to fill the spot. Before when we could afford subs (!!!) same process, except the principal would call the temp service to request a sub. We changed to this method because of problems we had with some of the subs that we were getting!
We call the P, he just tells us he hopes we feel better. If you're sick stay home, I hate to be around someone who's a walking virus. They're your sick days and legally they can't ask if you're running a fever, at least it's not legal around here.
I call my Vice Principal at one of my schools, and the Principal (since there is no VP) at my other school. I've never had to call in sick, but I have had specialist appointments. I also had to call my Principal at one school when I had a car accident and couldn't make it out there yesterday.
Teachers are responsible for getting their own subs at my school. I would call my P to let her know I wouldn't be coming in and who would be subbing for me. I would also e-mail detailed lessons to her so that she could get them to the sub. This is a new procedure this year. In the past the secretary was in charge of lining up subs.
Our secretary takes care of getting a sub for us when we call in sick. I don't even have to talk to her personally - I call the school, leave a message on her voice mail and she checks the voice mail from her home before she comes to school.
We call a central number (automated) for our Board. We record all the pertinent information, including the reason for absence, and a sub is assigned. We can also call back to find out which sub has been assigned.
we just call and leave a message on an answering machine. And once I call in, I don't worry about it anymore. It's not my responsibility to get the sub.
We call our principal, and then he just retaliates when you get back by doing this peeping tom thing outside the classroom door to see if you really are doing your job or not, and listening in over the intercom. If he knows you've been out a lot for an on-going problem its even worse.
My principal has always - okay, I have only had to call in a couple of times - responded with, "Not a problem, I hope you feel better."
Thats the way it is here in my area unless its a meeting or the teacher/aide gets sick during school and the office staff will call or principal (rare).
