If money and time were not an issue, what would you do for a career (don't say teacher...unless you are not a teacher or training to be a teacher) For me I would love to be an astronomer or astrophysicist. I tend to stay up till the wee hours of the night and I really enjoyed the astronomy classes I took as an undergraduate.
I thought I wouldn't mind being a travel agent. One time I had extensive dreams that I was a special accommodations coordinator for Walt Disney. In my dream I was a big time executive and I would go around to all the properties and make big time recommendations that they followed in order to make things more accessible. In my dream other places started adopting some of the things I implemented.
I'd want to get a PhD in anthropology & work in a museum & travel 25% of the time doing excavations, etc.
It was marketing. If I had another career after this teaching one, I'd ... this is really hard because I sacrificed for this new career and I absolutely love it ... I guess I would .. Oh! I'd teach hip-hop aerobics. It's so fun, and I'd be enormously fit (dare I say, "fabulous,"!)
I would be a family court lawyer or a social worker. Something with kids and helping them for sure. Either that, or I'd write speeches for politicians.
I used to want to be a wedding coordinator, but with all these wedding shows, I am not so sure any more. I would love to be an education director in a museum, and I have also thought about studying linguistics, perhaps to become a therapist or to research sociolinguistics.
TV chef Rock star Benevolent dictator Spelling and punctuation police (it's careers, not carreers!!)
Before a serious illness, I was actually studying Egyptology at the Oriental Institute at the U of C. Now though, I would do the BU forensic anthro masters program and then go into forensic geology.
I'd love to be on Broadway. I love to sing and act, and I cry at shows not because they are fabulous (even though they are), but because I'm not up there. My dh's grandfather was a major performer at the Metropolotan Opera, and I often lament that he passed away while we had just started dating, and I never got to pick his brain or use his connections... Or a CSI lab person, like Abby on NCIS. I never really understood Chemistry, though, so that's a bit of a stretch. But I would love to be able to figure out puzzles like that and just KNOW the chemical reactions and make-ups, etc. Or a lawyer. But I have trouble translating legal-ese. So that's probably out. I'd love to own a bookstore. If I ever get a storefront for Sprout, then that dream will come true. I'll throw open the doors of my garage and put out an 'open' sign, and we'll be in bookstore business!
I take a bunch of photography classes. Then I'd find a way to make a living some way incorporating photography and travel. I have no idea what that might be in terms of careers.
I would say playwright but I already do that on the side anyway. Full-time screenwriter, I guess. Used to think I wanted to act but I get much more satisfaction putting words into the actors' mouths.
I would love to be a forensic pathologist...but I would love to participate in the detective part of it also; like Kay Scarpetta in the Patricia Cornwell books.
Well I've been a detective for several years now (and a patrol officer before that). Whenever someone would ask me what my other career would be, I always said that I wanted to teach social studies and coach football. Now that I have actually gotten a job doing that (I start in 3 weeks), I'm not sure how to answer the question anymore. I like watching the Dog Whisperer, but I am a Cat Man. Maybe I could be a Cat Whisperer. BLH
When I started college, I had every intention of going into forensic science - either pathology or anthropology. Then I took a couple of classes under the education umbrella to fill a requirement and I fell in love with working with kids. So, if teacher were no longer an option and I had the time and money to go back to school (and pay all my bills) I would go into forensic anthropology.
My favorite classes in college were anthropology and an ancient art history course which gave me the opportunity to meet Egyptologist Bob Brier, AKA Mr. Mummy. It seems several of us are interested in anthropology and similar fields.
Some of his ideas are way out there, but I really like him. He also did a course for The Teaching Company that is wonderful. I had a few courses from Mark Lehner at Chicago. We had monthly lecture series too with people from all over the world. Definitely unforgettable experiences.
I love Dr. G and Forensic Files. There was also a time when I started college that my one goal was to transfer to the University of Tennessee just to have a chance to get near the body farm.
- Law enforcement - specifically member of a SWAT team - Football coach - maybe the UT linebacker coach - Sniper in the Special Forces - California Governor - so I could veto all the **** that comes out of the state legislature
If money weren't an obstacle, I would want to be a tour guide. I love showing people around, finding fun and interesting facts, meeting new people... you still get to be a teacher of sorts.
If I had realized such a thing as linguistics existed when I was young, I might have studied that. I have a degree in drama and wanted to be a performer, but being a teacher is like being on stage for five hours!
Economic geography professor. I studied rural development in Vietnam in graduate school before becoming a teacher. I applied to a PhD program in geography and for Teach for America at the same time. When the time came, I chose TFA. I still love economic geography.
Flight attendant. I have always loved flying and thought it would be the coolest thing to just fly around all day.
Most likely teaching or school admin (ha! I get to say that). I did teach SAT test-prep classes to high schoolers for a couple of years, and enjoyed it immensely. That's different from teaching a public school class, of course, in terms of population, motivation, length, and paperwork, but we still had some class management issues to deal with.
I also wanted to be a criminologist at one time. I never regretted my decision not to until I made a friend this year whose father is a criminologist.
