How about a nice blouse and dress pants for work and bring a jacket that you can add for the interview?

Is it a screening interview or a formal interview?

I once went to a screening interview on my lunch. I wore dress pants, a dressy cami, and a cardigan to school/work. I just changed my shoes for the interview.

I agree to change to heels for the interview. (I don't wear heals often at work!) I would probably wear dress pants, nice blouse and cardigan like others mentioned. Or I have a nice dressy black pencil skirt and I'd pair it with the blouse and cardigan. :)

I wore pants, nice shirt, and a bright blazer when I had to go straight from work. I didn't change my shoes as I'm not comfortable in heels and didn't know if any walking would be necessary :)

I find it interesting that a few people suggested changing to heels -- is this something that is seen as important interview attire? I *hate* wearing heels and usually wear nice flats with a small flat heel (not just ballet flats).

I always wear heels to an interview. I've seen people interview in flip-flops :)dizzy:), so not everyone has the same perspective.

Personally, I like (no, love!) shoes, especially heels. I just rarely wear them to work because my feet aren't happy when I do. I loved when I worked as a receptionist- I could wear heels everyday and I was very happy about that. Teaching? Totally not worth it!

I also found that interesting, and, if I'm honest, slightly ridiculous. I LOVE heels actually, but would never say they are a *must* for interviews --- not saying that anyone here said that... just giving my opinion. Flip flops, thigh high boots, sneakers... big no-no, obviously. But I think professional looking flats (with small heel or without) are perfectly fine.

I don't think that heels are a must, but to me it would get me out of school-mode and into interview-mode. Height can add authority, make you stand up straighter, etc. So no, you wouldn't have to change to heels, but consider how to get yourself in the mood, so to speak.

When I had an interview before/during/after school and was going to work first I wore what I was going to wear to the interview and just wore a cardigan instead of the jacket while I was working and changed it for the interview.

OK good to know since I never wear heels! It's interesting to hear what other people wear and what makes you feel polished. For me, a jacket puts me into "interview mode" since I almost never wear one otherwise.

That's the idea! For me, to get in that not-working-but-need-to-be-professional mode, I would:

    Brush my teeth
    Blot my nose
Put on heels, or at least fancier shoes
Change jewelry-just something a little fancier

I like the interview-mode thoughts!!! That's a great way to think about it. Thanks!! :D

This is also why if you have a phone interview, you shouldn't do it in your pajamas. You should shower and dress just as you would if it were in person-it will help, I promise!

That's not necessarily your case here, OP, but for anyone else who is reading. :)

I had a phone interview a few weeks ago. It wasn't scheduled. She asked if we could do it now when she called. I was on Spring Break and it was 10 am and I was still in my PJ's. It was also the first "interview" of the season for me. Thankfully it went well even though I wasn't dressed up!
