I absolutely can not believe that your kids are not getting more physical education! I am very fortunate as a gym teacher that my students come to the gym everyday. It does make it hard on me b/c I have upwards of 95 kids at once b/c I get the whole grade level at once, but we make it work! My pre-K and kinder classes get 30 minutes daily and 1st-5th grade gets 45 minutes daily. It is so important to get the kids active so they can burn off energy and be better students in the classroom!

Just out of curiosity, does your state have a minimum number of minutes kids are supposed to get physical education per week? In Texas it's 135 minutes per week but they don't really enforce it so I think it gets ignored for the most part. In total, my Pre-K and kinder students get 150 minutes per week and everyone else gets 235 minutes per week.

All of our blocks are 45 minutes long (except pre-k/kinder PE/computers)
Phys Ed- 5 days per week
    Music- 1 day a week
    Art- 1 day a week
Computers- 2 days a week (teachers should be there too)
    Library- 1 day per week
15 minute daily break every day- alternates between classroom teachers monitoring and specialists monitoring.

We have PE 3 x per week
    Computers once a week
    Music once a week

All are about 45 minutes long.

That is a rip-off! Our kids can go to the library on a daily basis.

Can I ask a question...I have always wondered this. I know that music, pe...specials are different but how do you work with students who get pulled out for reading or resource?

I have always had a problem with this in student teaching. Do you just leave them out of the lesson or re explain everything again?
I know I would have students pulled out in the middle of something and come back in the middle of math and be lost. It was hard for me to stop everything and help them.

    Last year, we had:
    PE 2x/week
    Music 1x/week
    Art 1x/week
    Library 1x/week
    each for 25 minutes.
I have been told that my new principal doesn't consider library to be an enrichment, so I have no idea what my new schedule will be!

I have told our principal that I don't mind if the kids are pulled from the gym once or twice a week b/c they could technically miss those days and still get their minimum number of minutes. Of course I am fortunate to get all my kids everyday. If I didn't get them everyday, I would put my foot down and say no that they shouldn't be pulled as often unless absolutely necessary. I don't like doing this though b/c for some kids, this is the only exercise they will get for the day. The problem is, MY KIDS DON'T WANT TO BE PULLED OUT! Every time the speech teacher walks in the gym to pick up some kids their faces just kind of fall b/c they don't want to leave.

Last year we had a 6 day rotation, but not sure about this year yet. Each special was 45 min. We had:

    Art 1x
    Music 1x
    PE 1x
    Science 1x
    Social Studies 1x
    Guidance 1x

We had to schedule 15 min. of library (1 x each week).
Our computer labs are open labs--we have to reserve a lab for our students and be there to teach whatever it is we are using the lab for (research, testing, etc.).

1 day of our rotation had a double special period that was used as team planning.

I liked the team planning period but dreaded the day with no specials... :)

MrsCSoup - I would have a hard time keeping a 6-way rotation for a 5-day school week straight in my head! Question: how does an entire 4th grade class go to the library, have a mini-lesson in book selection, topic of the week, etc., pick out books and get checked out in 15 minutes?:dizzy:

it doesn't happen in the library...lol We are lucky to get checked out in 15 min.
I kept the rotation day on the board under the date. That was usually the least of my worries...

ugh! that is just showing in reality if you're brighter we'll give you more opportunities..but if you're not..too bad. I would hate to be a kid at that school...seeing some get it and others not.

I'm in a small private school, so we don't have any specialist teachers. For grades 1-4, each teacher takes one subject (music, art, PE, and computers) and we rotate classes, so they get each class once per week for 30 minutes. Library visits happen once or twice a week and are scheduled by the teachers around our volunteers' schedules.

Our specials are 50 minutes each

    We have:

    Media
    PE
    Art
    Music
    Computer

(I am not required to accompany them to any of these)

I also have access to a computer lab on our floor (2 story building) but I will use it if I decide to have them do a test more quickly or work on a project.

Gym, Library, Music, Art, Spanish and Computer - all once a week 45 minutes each. Mass on Fridays for an hour.

How do you all get any teaching done? I struggle to fit everything in and I have a lot less specials time than some of you!

Wow, I wish we had Spanish!

    We have...
    P.E.
    Music
    Computer
All set up on this really weird rotating schedule with A and B weeks to ensure enough time.

And every other week we have library.
