While this isn't in the neighborhood where I teach, most of my kids have family and friends in the neighborhood in the article.

For those who don't want to read the whole article, there was a mass shooting in a particularly rough area of Miami. 9 people were shot and 2 have died. I just don't understand why these things happen.

I don't understand either. When I was a kid it was so different. I feel so sorry for the children that are growing up now in this world.

That is incredibly sad especially since no one is coming forward with information. I can't imagine living in fear like that. My heart goes out to your students and their families!

There is so much violence anymore. We had a high schooler gunned down outside of his school last week, started with a fist fight. Do they not understand that guns kill and you can't redo it?

I heard about the murders in Miami, horrible.

The horrible thing is that these kids don't care that they are taking someones life. They don't care about repercussions or punishment. How have kids become so numb to death and killing?

Lack of parental involvement, being allowed to watch virtually ANYTHING they want on TV/cable at ANY time they want, listening to music r\that glorifies killing, etc. Combine all the above with the anger that is boiling just under the surface and it all explodes in killings. I think the "why" is easily understood, fixing the problem is much more difficult.

It's so sad and can make a person feel real hopeless at times. W just had one of our middle schoolers shot and killed. He was only 14. The murder was said to be gang related. So much violence for no reason.

Most shootings of young people seemed to stem from gangs. We all know that this is no reason for the violence, but for these kids that are the gang, the gang is the closest thing to a "loving" family that these kids have.

Great point, STG. I feel like most of the issues stem from the family. Heck, in the school district where I am subbing, some of the parents are in gangs. What sort of future does that offer a child? It's so sad and depressing.

I agree with you all. I volunteer at an inner city school every now and then and it kills me to see how those kids live. Even the little kindergarteners are so aware of whats going on in the projects across the street. I can only hope that by becoming a teacher, I can, in some way, help these kids have a better future. But I do think it's an uphill battle.

This is just tragic... I'd like a cure for all of this. I'm so sorry for those involved.

Thurs. nite my 19 year old son was delivering wings for a
local franchise and was held up by, what he described as, teens with two guns. They got $80 from him but missed his wallet.
He was held up about 9:15 and I had just said a prayer for him and his sister (law student in Va.) at 9pm. My kid is just working to go to school. It is a screwed up world. And he lives in a nice place. There are just horrible places you can get into.
THey will not deliver there anymore, an old mobile home park.
