What is Montessori?

I have heard of the Montessori as a teaching philosophy, but I have no idea what it is. Can someone explain it to me? Is it something that I could apply to my homeschooling and/or the daycare/preschool that I plan to open in the fall? Are there any websites that could help me out in understanding the basics?

    Thanks

I got books from the library when I wanted to know about Montessori. We visited our local Montessori school and was told it's all about preparing them for a productive life. They are taught how to pour and carry, things are done very meticulously. I found all the teachers very kind there, very genuinely interested in the children.

Montessori is a way of teaching where you are more of a guide than teacher. Our school uses Montessori methods and conventional ones too. You prepare the lessons and the child learns by doing. My room has ages 3-6 ad the older ones help the younger ones. I am just swamped with school stuff or would send you some links. I will try to get some time this week end.

One of my friends is thinking of sending her children to one of these schools and she asked my advice on the situation. I told her I didn't know much about the Montessori Schools. Can you guys tell me anything that would help her out in making her decision.

maria montessori was a medical doctor. she studied the growth and learning development of children. in her day a method(a way of teaching children )was unheard of. she went outside of the rules of how the teacher is the leader and the children must obey. she asks persons who wish to teach children to act like a guide or a director . someone of this kind should be soft and have a beautiful spirit. as a director a prepared environment ( this is a space that the child feels welcome where activities specially desiged by maria montessori are kept for child use. free to choose and explore . there is so much a child can absorb . the areas of learning are
practical life, sensorial, math, language, culture .

a child placed in this environment can grow and expand with self esteem and a have a jump start to their education.

Thanks MommaRuthie for all the links. This is my first post at my new home. ;) I am a future teacher, and am a sponge to all that's 'Teaching'. I am 27 and am starting school to become an Influencer/Guide/Educator.

I am so anxious to be an assistant. I know that it requires patience. I still require some more credits, but gees I just want to get my foot in a local school!!

    SIGNED---- EXCITIED TO TEACH ;)
