I learned a new one recently that became my new, temporary favorite word:
Smellfungus :lol:

It sounds so much more polite than "Shut up!"

My kids-- both here and at school-- smile and stop talking when I say it.

 

Creepy, using REAL with a lot of emphasis (i.e. to my husband, "you're REAL cute"), whaaa (sounds like wh-uhhh for what when something is just unbelievable, derived from Despicable Me when the minions say it, hehe).....I probably have more but I'll stop embarassing myself now!

I'm partial to absquatulate, which is a made-up word meaning 'to stop squatting in one place and go squat somewhere else'. As in, "I've been in this coffeehouse long enough: it's time to absquatulate."

Of course, I also quite like floccinaucinihilipilification, which is 'the act of esteeming something as worthless' - it's a nonce word recorded in the Oxford English Dictionary, made from four Latin adverbs (flocci, nauci, nihili, pili) each of which can be translated as 'worthlessly'.

 

Mine is "Yes indeed" when something crazy, tragic, or unbelievable happens. I also use it when my students are performing well.

 

I've loved milieu ever since I learned it in 8th grade from my vocabulary workbook (it sounded so funny when the teacher would say it). I already knew most of the words in the book so when I got to this word it was exciting since I'd never heard it before!

 

Ok, now I'm going to be looking for an opportunity to use this word LOL

 

TeacherNY, for your sake and the world's I hope you have to be looking for a long time - but the cynical part of me is not holding our breath.

Another favorite - Pantificate and depantificate. To put on or take off pants. My BF needs to depantificate and put on shorts the second he gets home from work.

Now, TG, just so you know, I've already used the word smellfungus a few times on my husband. But then he said that I was the one who was being a smellfungus and to knock it off.

I use that word a lot, too.

 

I seem to recall affluenza from the 1970s... it was a great word then, and it still is.

 

I use "wonky" a lot to describe something that just isn't working correctly.

A fifth grade student of mine once came up with

humongarious

which means really big!

I also like discombobulated! My normal state of mind!

 

I like wonky, too, but also like hinkey. I tell my class that sometimes they give me a bad case of "the yips" and they always laugh. I just like the word.

 

I also use wonky. I like wackadoo, too. One of my old co-workers used to say that a lot.

 

I used the word wackadoo twice today while I was helping an ELL student fill in some answers on a test. She read the sentence to me with the blank left out and then I reread it with some of the word bank choices. When one was particularly wrong she'd make a face and I'd say "Yeah, that'd be wackadoo, can't possibly be that answer!" Yup, definitely a fan of wackadoo. And my ELL student clearly got a kick out of me saying the word too which helped take away some of her stress.

 

:lol::lol: NOw when I get out of bed in the morning I can announce "Time get going and pantificate!"

 

Hullabaloo! I love that word.

Fiddlesticks instead of swearing or saying "What the . . . " I teach my kids to say this instead of OMG.

Also "hasty," as in "If you don't hurry and clean up those blocks I am going to have to get hasty with you." Got that from my nephew.

 

These words are not said at school. I'd have to think really hard how I play with signs but I'm not sure if I do or if I could convey it.

I do know sometimes we teachers will sign "I is fine" and mouth it too. We know it is incorrect so it is sort of a parody and way of saying it's no big deal, this too will pass. (This is not done in front of the kids).

I love some of these words. I need to adopt them for my home vocabulary.

 

Pantificate is quite the mouthful. I just practiced saying it.

 

I had a poster in my room that said That's so GAY and That's so RETARDED, except I had those words crossed out, and the kids wrote better alternatives. So if someone said one of those phrases, I would just point to the poster and ask them to make a better choice. I remember one year a class adopted Poppycock! So instead, i would hear "That's poppycock!" all the time. I love that word now.

I need to put that poster back up on the wall.

 

Right now my favorite word is Geebo, which is what my 20 month old grandson calls mangos.

 

I love using the word "fantabulous". I also like ginormous.
My friend at school and I always say "Jimmy cracked corn"-and the other finishes with "and I don't care!"
In light of the Charlie Sheen media hoopla-my family says "DUH-winning!" a lot!
