Consider please that what you are perceiving as a condescending attitude is a reponse to your misplaced 'humor' and disrespect.

I don't think I would / will give anything when / if I get my own classroom. I know I'll teach middle or high school, and if I did give anything, I would have to buy 100+ of those things. In elementary settings you'd only have to buy for about 30 something students. Also while I think it's cute to give something like you guys mentioned in elementary settings, I think 7th grade and up may be too old for that. (during student teaching at a middle school I haven't observed any teachers giving anything, and it seemed right to me.)

And if I ever get my own classroom again in a correctional setting (as I'm hoping) I wouldn't be allowed to give anything anyways, and there is no 'first day' of school. It's a school year that never begins, never ends, just keeps going on (actually I like that part)

WOW! Sad to see my innocent question turn into something like this!

You got it! :pThe kids nap to Kenny Roger's..."You've got to know when to hold, know when to fold them, know when to walk away, know when to run. You never count your money while you're sitting at the table. There'll be time enough for counting when the dealing's done." :p[

Well, our prison is hiring a teacher - but I doubt you'll want to relocate to Ohio from Southern Cali! hahahahahaha Good luck on your hope to teach in corrections. I wouldn't trade it if they'd triple my salary.

I have a space theme in my room. I brought them all a post card from NASA (I was there for a week long workshop), then I gave them a baggie with a note that had one of my favorite quotes "Shoot for the moon, even if you miss, you'll land among the stars." It had a mini moon pie and a few starbursts in the baggie. :)

Nothing beyond a bookmark or pencil.

And if I may note, and I've lost the original post to which I am referring, while there isn't much "mocking" going on here at A to Z, there is a a little "bullying" every now and again.

We had a million leftover books that were crowding the hallway because people were leaving them out with "free to a good home" on them, so our P asked us to take enough for our class and give each child a book to take home the first day. Many of them are in Spanish from back in the days when the school was bilingual. As a "wellness school" we're not allowed to give candy or food/treats away of any kind.

That's a great idea, waterfall! Another teacher at my school was cleaning out some cabinets of inherited materials and found some old file-folder games, etc. that she doesn't need/can't use. I think she was going to let the kids have some of those.

I love this idea! Do you think the kids care that the books are used? I have third graders and would love to give them a book gift since I'm their ELA/SS teacher, but can't really find anything cheap enough to buy all new copies since I need 60 of them (two classes of 30).

Well, the first day is tomorrow, so I can let you know! Honestly, I would be surprised and a little insulted if they didn't want them because they were "used." We would definitely be having a chat about that if it happened!

I'm changing my goldfish bag a bit...since I'm going with a 'Go For the Gold in 3rd Grade' Olympic bulletin board theme, I'm going to make the header tag say 'Go for the Goldfish:)

I caught myself "aww"-ing out loud at the color-changing play-doh .

I'm surprised this is in Debate & Marathon though...
