    Thread spin-off...

What have you done that is out of the ordinary or unique...or just something you doubt most people have done?

I was in an official off-Broadway show. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was touring, and stopped for over a week in my town. My children's choir was chosen to perform with them. We had practice on our own for three weeks-our first time with the real performers was on opening night. What a thrill! Sam Harris played Joseph, and he was HOT!!! Waaaaaaay better than Donny Osmond, in my opinion. Performing in front a huge crowd like that really gave me the theatre bug-I dream of being on the big stage again. I've done that show again through community theatre and played Zebulan-I'm not sure I can ever hear that soundtrack again-tooooo much. But I do really miss performing. I can still smell the fog machine, and feel the adrenaline as the full orchestra starts playing the medley in the beginning of the show. Sigh.

Most of the bad things were before I turned 17, I haven't been drunk since I was 16. As an adult I spend half my life wondering how my parents can forgive me,

Hmm, I'm trying to think what I've done that's unique &/or what the avg person hasn't done. I don't know...all I can think of right now is...

...as an infant, I had a 50/50 chance to live.

...you know that kids' TV show called Romper Room? I was on it as a child, but was shy & cried & didn't continue through the end of it.

...I've shot a gun yrs ago (at the firing range).

...I was an extra in the pilot episode of the TV show, Sweet Valley High. I even bought the DVD set of season 1, so I can always have it to look back on.

...I have all my school yearbooks every yr from kindergarten to college.

...eaten goat before at a wedding. It was the food of the groom's culture.

...rode a horse a few times when I was a child.

...never had my own room from birth to age 13. I slept in a murphy bed attached to the wall in the living rm.

...went to a public school for the 1st time at age 13. First time riding a school bus was in 9th grade.

...my 1st date was my HS senior prom.

...amongst other pets I've had throughout my childhood, I had 2 hermit crabs. I got them for a 2nd gr school science project.

...competed in a tennis tournament at UCLA when I was 11.

Flown in a water plane to a single cabin on a lake in the Wabakimi Wilderness, Canada (no electricity, no phone, only lake water, outhouse), stayed over a week, completely isolated from the rest of the world (except my husband was with me ... it was our honeymoon).

Oh, slept in bunkbeds on my honeymoon (see above).

I've twirled fire, knives, and knives on fire in front of a couple thousand people.

I've been a national champion and coached a few national champions.

I've shot opossums and armadillos from my back door.

I got married sitting on my couch with overlapping broken bones in my leg.

I (used to) know how to drive an 18 wheeler.

About fifteen of my school faculty got up on a bar on the river walk in San Antonio and sang YMCA while we were at a national reading conference (most of the attendees from my school were presenters at the conference!). I was the one in the cowboy hat if y'all were there. ;o)

Actually, my last reconstructive surgery was July 8th. I'm hoping the stitches will come out tomorrow. And I love sushi (so does my 11 year old son) but hate oysters (as do all 3 of my kids-- my husband is the only one in the house who likes them.)

I'm guessing most people here haven't:

....Adopted a child from Korea. (I know I'm not the only adoptive parent here, but most people probably haven't.)

... been to the Macy's NY Thanksgiving Day parade.

That...and the rose bowl parade are someday-dreams of mine!

With the Macy's parade I want to be one of those elves that walks the balloons. :)

One of the guys who teaches with my husband worked part time for Macys for years, and has done it a number of times.

Hmmm....Some things I've done that I don't think many others have...

...Been snorkeling off the coast of Bermuda.

...Swam on a synchronized swim team.

...Been to the Olympics in Atlanta...and be sitting in the stands when the U.S. won the team gold in gymnastics

...Met Chelsea Clinton (while working at the basketball arena, during the Olympics)

...Sat on the stage at the Grand Ole Opry during a show

    ...Met Brad Paisley

...Worked at Peaches and met Charlie Rich while he was in the store with his grandson

    So what you're saying is I couldn't do it over a weekend...hahahahaha

I am all about those once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Hey Alice...have you ever gone down to Chincoteague, VA. to watch the pony swim from the children's book series Misty of Chincoteague by Margaret Henry?

    SO cool!

    SWOON!

    Let's see...
    - went through the 04 & 05 hurricane seasons & learned that electricity is a beautiful, beautiful thing... and that a side burner on a grill is an extremely important feature
    - created a flotilla of roped-together 5 gallon buckets & plywood & rowed across my street to bring hot coffee to my neighbor
    - watched a 50 ft pine tree go straight through my neighbors roof (then was a horrible person & thanked God it didn't go the other way through MY roof)
    - laid out a chum click & fished for sharks
    - played in a professional orchestra & quintet
    - met Jamie & Andrew Wyeth when I was little

    - harvest a farm (and not just on facebook), which means I have driven a tractor, a combine and a grain truck. I know how to work an auger
    - gotten REALLY drunk
    - dated a professional athlete
    - been paid off for his cheating with nice things and trips
    - dated the same cheater from 17 to 23 - off and on towards the end since I got tired of being the cheatee
    - been asked to pose for a men's magazine (not nude)
    - been stalked (we have peace bonds in Saskatchewan for those cases, but they do SFA, and the jack*** actually has to lay hands on you or damage your property to get a restraining order)
    - kissed a stranger (I still think kisses are party favours - read Trickster's Choice by Tamora Pierce to get the quote)
    - taught in three provinces
    - seen every team in the NHL play live at least once (including crappy teams like Florida and Toronto)
    - won money betting on sports
    - seen a live UFC event (and won money betting on the fights - thank you GSP)
    - competed at an national level in two sports

Yeah there's more I'm sure, but I'll just leave it at that.

Candian Girl reminded me-I modeled in a bridal runway show. HA! Those dresses are HEAVY!!! And the heals are unstable! Mixed my clumsiness, it was recipe for disaster, but I made it through.

Thanks. I was also an extra in the 2002 film Slackers starring Devon Sawa & Jaime King, but the scene I was in happened so fast, I couldn't really see myself that time.

But, being an extra is interesting! Now ANYONE wondering how to meet new people, you should definitely be an extra! Plus you get paid like $80 & up for a day of fun work & the caterer they have provides good food!

Let's see, what have I done that's interesting?
    • Prayed at the Wailing (Western) Wall in Jerusalem
    • Watched my hair turn white by the time I was 20 (I color it now)
    • Learned how to ride a unicycle, although not well
    • Survived a crushing childhood depression (hence the white hair)
    • Got into a screaming match including F-bombs with the head of my college Education Department
    • Other things I'm too shy to mention in a public forum!

List below, keeping out anything illegal I may or may not have done (with a wink to msmullen). So it's kind of a partial list...

    * married in secrecy
    * eaten whale, live abalone, natto, bee larva, and drank various unlabeled homemade Asian liquors
    * done things more culturally difficult than eating whale (a few here can probably guess what I'm talking about, if you're curious PM me)
    * been homeless
    * taught a class in Powerpoint when I had never used the application (wasn't great, but it was passable instruction).
    * raised a baby bird that's fallen from its nest to adulthood
    * won a blindfold chess game (opponent wasn't blindfolded)
    * converted a Christian to atheism (I didn't start it)
    * been a pinball prodigy
    * gone skinny-dipping
    * been in the World Trade Center on the day it collapsed (and other related things, like seen an airplane crash, worked above the 85th floor, etc.)
    * soaked in a hot spring
    * lived with a schizophrenic person
    * learned Japanese without living there

Wow. I feel like I haven't really lived yet. Sheesh.

I pierced my own ear in the cartilage area. I do NOT recommend that.

I was an extra in the baseball movie *61, with Billy Crystal. They were filming in downtown Detroit at the old baseball stadium. My friends and I had a closet full of vintage clothes, so we threw them on and joined in. Lots of fun, but not a great way to earn a living.

I would love to nurse a baby bird.

Won a champion ribbon 9 years in a row at county fair.
    Prepared dinner for a senator.
Wrote a parenting curriculum for a school district.

-got a tour of Loretta Lynn's bus by Doo for my 16th birthday.
-caught myself on fire while teaching CCD class during advent
-was married for 15 yrs and never once met my inlaws (just for the record they are alive)
    -helped shoot fireworks shows.
