I went to school today to get some work done. While walking back from the copier,i heard some odd noises. It sounded like something breaking, but I wasn't sure. Our teachers are in and out frequently, so I assumed it was another teacher. I went in my room and continued working, but still heard the noises. A few minutes later the police rolled up!!! There were two kids outside breaking windows. They broke a double pane window all the way through in the room next to mine. My day at school ended writing a police report!

Has anything ever happened to you at school after hours?

Wow, that is frightening. Did the police catch the kids?

Nothing like that has happened to me. Things do happen at night, though, so I'm careful when I'm there alone.

Yep! They were still playing on the playground equipment when the police pulled up.

A long time ago, when I was doing my student teaching at an inner city high school, I heard screaming outside my room. When I (stupidly) tore open the door, two boys were standing over a girl with knives and she was bleeding from slashes on her face. They were punishing her for a drug deal gone bad with her boyfriend. Luckily, they ran when the saw me. Scary!

Nothing has happened to me, other than hearing odd creaks and noises from the resident ghosts. However, I don't like to stay there alone after dark, as the neighborhood isn't the safest.

Luckily nothing scary has happened while I've been at work. I never go by myself at night. We have a second shift custodian, so I can go in until 10:00 and somebody will be there.

One Sunday afternoon I was walking down the hall to go to the copy room, and the toilet flushed in the boys bathroom. I nearly jumped out of my skin. Faulty automatic flush.

I went in one Saturday and heard running water, turns out the boys bathroom plumbing had broken and water was filling the bathroom.

We're not allowed after hours. I did go in one time when there was something else going on in the building. Caught some kids running around where they weren't suppose to be.

Wasn't there a teacher that posted here awhile back saying something about some students got on the intercom and was singing "Welcome to the jungle...we're gonna find you" or something like that and she locked herself in her room. That was so scary just for me to read; I remember it all these years later. Cant remember who the poster was.

I found a grass snake inside my room one day after school. That was an..... interesting find to say the least!

We aren't allowed in the building unless one of the caretakers is there; I've worked quite late a few times, but never had anything unusual happen to me. The caretakers did have an incident last spring of a skunk wanting to keep them company.

We can stay until our cleaners lock the place up.

I had a student follow me out and try to walk me to my car, kept talking to me, etc. I just stood there and repeatedly said 'leave', until another teacher came by.

We cannot stay after hours. Our work hours are 7:30-3:30 but we can be there from 7:00-4:00 only.

    No weekends
    No summers

This story happened to one of my friends. Sometimes teachers come in on the weekend to get things ready for the next week. One of my friends decided to stop by on one particular Sunday several years ago. When she got there, there was a security guard sitting at the front desk (which was normal--there's always a guard there if there is an event going on at school over the weekend.) She told him that she would be working in her classroom. A couple of hours later, when she decided to leave, she saw that she was the only car in the parking lot. My school is at the top of a hill, so she drove down to the bottom to get back to the street. To her surprise, the gate at the bottom of the hill was closed and locked with a padlock! She was trapped on the campus, and didn't have a cell phone. She couldn't get back into the building, either. She ended up having to climb over the gate, go to a nearby house, and call the fire department who broke the lock!

On a related note, when I was going for my 6th year degree, I used to carpool to the university with two of my coworkers. We would leave our cars at school and then just pick them up after class. When we returned to school one evening to get our cars, the gate was locked, with my car and my friend's car both on the other side of the gate! Needless to say, I never left my car there again after that episode!

We rotate which campus we go to for our professional development. The other campus is not safe, you have to have a code to get into the parking lot. Friday, I got in okay. Come time to leave, since I didnt leave immediately, a co-worker & I talked in the parking lot for a while, we had to wait for someone from that campus to leave for us to be able to get out of the lot.

They are not allowed to work past dark. The only exception to that is when they have a night function & then they need to leave with a partner.

Never anything dangerous here. One time, I thought some kids might be outside throwing pine cones or something at the window (I kept hearing thunks), but it turned out to be a bunch of birds that were dive-bombing the window. Oh, and once I was working during the summer and there was a pop-up storm that caused a tornado warning.

We are welcome any time or day, thankfully, but nothing crazy here. I did get stuck there until around midnight or so once because of a storm that flooded the area, but hey, I got a lot accomplished. :)

I'm in the portables and I used to have to call the police to escort me to my car if I left after sundown. Why? Because a parent who was suspected to be in a gang had made a legitimate death threat against me. The district/union/school didn't want me walking that far in an already sketchy neighborhood when he wanted to kill me.
    Pretty Scary.

Wow, I don't understand why some of you work in places that are not safe. Nothing ever happens at our school after hours, people are there at all different times.

Sometimes you go where the job is. Or it started out as a safe school and then the neighborhood turns.

And the kids can't help where they live. They deserve an education just as much as a child who lives in a "safe" neighborhood.

This was exactly my thought. Good grief -- if I had to watch my back in my own workplace, I'd find a new workplace that same day.

Our old school (new building this year) had a piano in the gym for our dance program. I was there on a Sunday night preparing for the next week when I hear the piano being played. I was definitely really creeped out...luckily one of the K teachers was there was well so I went to her room to ask her about it. It turns out a homeless man had been sneaking into the school through propped doors at night to play the piano!

Nothing bad has happened, but at my old school in Idaho it was pretty creepy if you were there at night. One night I went in around 8-9 pm and just felt scared walking through the halls. It's like a fishbowl in there-with the lights on, everyone could see what I'm doing from the outside, but I couldn't see them. I heard a radio once, but found out later it was the custodian's police scanner he keeps on.

I stopped by school on Sunday afternoon to pick up something that I needed and caught a custodian digging around in my desk in my office. I went in early Monday morning and told the principal and he acted like he didn't really believe me because I was new to the area and the janitor had been there for year. He had to get into my locked office to get to my desk and there he was. He didn't see me.

We're allowed to be there any day from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Our keys are deactivated any other time. I try not to be there alone after dark, but it happens.

Scariest thing when I've been by myself: Tornado. I was working at my desk when I heard the sirens going off. I grabbed my purse and ran downstairs. Let's just say when it was safe to leave I went home.

I have been at my school until 2 am in the summer before getting ready for the year. I always thought if the school had any friendly residents I would know by now! I don't think I could be the teacher I am if I wasn't allowed in my school whenever I wanted to be!

You can choose the district you'd like to be employed by, but you can't always choose the school. In the past, I've always worked for schools in very poverty-stricken/gang-infested areas. I just made sure not to be in the vicinity before sunrise or after sunset.

This happened at my first teaching job. If you wanted to go into the building after hours, you had to go in the front door, go into the main office, and deactivate the alarm system with a key switch. Each classroom had an intercom with a push button so teachers could call the office. I stopped by with one of the other teachers on a Saturday afternoon. We went in the front door and the office and turned off the alarm. While we were in the office, the intercom for his classroom beeped. The alarm was set up so no interior doors could be opened in the building when it was on. He pushed the button to answer the call and said "Hello, hello. Is anyone there?" No answer. We went down to his classroom and it was locked up and no one was in the building. He said there was a kid that wanted to take his class a few years back and they wouldn't let him because he had bad seizures. Seizures and power tools don't go together too well and this guy taught cabinetmaking. The kid ending up having a seizure at school and died in the hospital. Since he died, the teacher swore things like that would happen in his room. I guess he was going to be in that classroom one way or another.
