What happened to TV?

Discussion in 'Teacher Time Out' started by Austincheiver45, Sep 21, 2014.

It seems like most of the new shows created now days are crappy reality shows. Why do Americans like to watch stuff like this? Can't we have a serious show for once? I would like a epic space opera show that involves epic space battles and serious themes like war, politics, and science.

Back in the early 2000s we had awesome epic space operas like Battlestar Galactica and Babylon 5. I used to see a lot of commercials promoting the Battlestar Galactica TV series back in 2004-05. I was never interested in the space opera genre until earlier this year when I played the first Mass Effect under the recommendation of a friend. I thought the Battle for the Citadel scene was epic.

Why don't we see shows like Battlestar Galactica or Babylon 5 anymore? Did the network execs decide the genre was dead? I think we need more epic space battles on TV.

We don't see those shows because that snt where the collective interest is... Reality shows are popular for- myriad of reasons...but given there are more than a hundred channels of programming, 24/7, surely there is something you an find to occupy your visual input needs?

Well, I'm an American and I don't like crappy reality shows. I also don't like the shows you're talking about. Everyone has different tastes.

We all have different taste is right. :) Overall, yes, I think TV sure isn't what it used to be (80s & 90s for me personally). Sure, there's a few reality shows I watch, but I sure don't watch most of them by any means. I still have my list of faves...dramas, reality, etc. I don't really watch any sitcoms though & haven't found one I really liked in yrs. I guess the last sitcom I watched was Community, but I eventually stopped watching it. I personally don't care for space-themed shows myself.

I don't like reality shows. I like space themed shows even less. Except the Jetsons. They were cool.

My must watch shows this year are Blacklist, Nashville, and Grey's Anatomy. All of them are dramas but they also have storylines I can understand and relate to.

I've been hearing about the Blacklist a lot. I think I might check it out.
I find that you have to be really open to new shows also. There are some that I thought I would hate but after finally giving in and watching a few episodes I ended up liking them.

Or...you can do what I do if there's nothing good on tv. Read a book :D

Friendly reminder: Coming on again soon is the start of the last season of Parenthood!

By the way, the somewhat kind of space-themed show, well not really...more so sci-fi show on these days is Extant (yes, spelled that way) starring Halle Berry. Well, she plays an astronaut. I wanted to like this show, but stopped watching after 3 episodes.

SyFy is making a show based on The Expanse series by James S.A. Corey. I thought Leviathan Wakes was an awesome Sci Fi novel. It was like a combination of Firefly, Blade Runner, and Mass Effect.

Yeah, I hardly watch anything regularly anymore. I don't like to start a new show because if it's good it will get cancelled right away. My issue is that no one is creative anymore. They make the same law shows, the same medical shows-if something is successful let's just copy it on our network. They even make remakes of tv shows from the past or other countries. I'm waiting for the American version of Downton Abbey! ;)

I do like some reality shows. Project Runway and Master Chef for example, I think are fun to watch. I'm a big Sons of Anarchy fan-I think that's a show that no one's ever done before.

I don't watch much TV. Mostly sports. I can't wait for Downton Abbey. I watch The Voice, Parenthood, and Chicago Fire. I did watch The Red Band Society the other day because I was bored- I was very impressed. It will be on my must-see list.

I'd rather watch anything over the sci-fi shows the OP mentioned. I don't like fantasy at all- especially sci-fi.

I miss the shows I watched growing up- Home Improvement, Full House, Boy Meets World, etc... And of course Friends in my teenage and adult years.

I don't like the hour long dramas that seem to be popular.

I have to say I am a reality show fan. However, I only like certain reality shows. I am very excited for Wednesday night when it is the season finale of Big Brother and the season premier of Survivor. That will be a good night of television.

I would also be in favor of a new Space Western. A new Star Trek series would be amazing. Lately it seems like as soon as I get really invested in a sci-fi show it gets cancelled. In fact, many of my favorite shows are going off the air and not being replaced with the kinds of shows I like to watch.

I like The Voice...maybe, last season I wasn't into it. I like some reality shows. I like NCIS and can't wait for the new one. I also like Rizzoli and Isles. I watch Food Network. And for some reason I am into Judge Mathis right now.

Ugh, I agree. There is too much focus on reality TV. And years ago, in my opinion, reality was more interesting. I used to LOVE watching America's Next Top Model, but now that show is an absolute joke.

Right now, I've been watching on Netflix Buffy the Vampire Slayer. On Hulu I watch Parks and Recreation, Modern Family, and Project Runway (this is still watchable). I also like to watch Portlandia. :)

Go watch Sleepy Hollow. It premiered last season.

Don't read any plot descriptions, they aren't a good indicator of the quality of the show. If you liked supernatural shows like Buffy or X-Files, you'd enjoy Sleepy Hollow.

These are the shows i'll be watching this season:
    Sleepy Hollow
    The Blacklist
    New Girl
    Brooklyn Nine Nine
Manhattan (Surprisingly decent show from WGN, Season 1 Finale is in October)
    Hannibal (Premieres in... February?)
    Person of Interest
Forever (Maybe. I watched the pilot. I'll see how it is after four episodes, if it lasts that long)
Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (and then Marvel's Agent Carter when Shield is on winter break)
Red Band Society (Maybe. Depends on how the second episode is. The first episode was a bit... tenuous for my tastes)
Bones (More to have as background noise, and because my parents like to have it DVR'd in case they have nothing else to watch)
Galavant (If you haven't seen the trailer you sort of need to - it's a musical show composed by Alan Menken, will have like 8-10 22 minute episodes a season)

I forgot about Sleepy Hollow. I will have to catch up on last season since I only watched about half the episodes. If it wasn't for Netflix I would not have watched most shows because I don't have cable. Also, when you don't have cable, you become more selective in your tv show watching because you don't end up putting just anything on for background noise. All in all I'd rather read but am really open to any new shows (although reality shows are still at the bottom of my list).

    Returning Shows I'll Watch:
    Big Bang Theory
    NCIS
    Agents of Shield
    SVU
    Bones
    Parenthood
    Chrisley Knows Best (sometimes)

New Shows I'm giving a shot:
    Red Band Society
    Mysteries of Laura
    Scorpion
    NCIS: New Orleans
How to Get Away With Murder
    Selfie

Mostly I record the shows on DVR and catch up on the weekends. I still need to finish watching The Strain and The Leftovers from this summer, and I'm a few episodes behind on Manhattan. Some shows I have recorded, but still haven't watched.

I'm very irritated with CBS because their sports broadcasts go over so much that their Sunday night shows are never on when they are supposed to be. So The Good Wife premiered last night, one of my favorites, and I missed it all because my DVR caught whatever was on before it. Happens every Sunday til February. I wish there was a way to update their schedule so DVR's would adjust accordingly.

    #firstworldproblems

My other can't miss shows are:
    The Amazing Race
    Scandal
Law and Order: SVU (although I am tiring of this one)
    Grey's (same as SVU)
    Downton Abbey

There is a website that you can watch Downton Abbey on the same time it's on in the UK.

I've caught a few episodes of Girl Meets World and it was good. Gets that Boy Meets World fix in again.

Ugh, ANTM is so awful this year!! It's less about the modeling and more about the drama! Who's sleeping with who? And the whole Romeo thing...wow.

The only reality shows that I watch is America's Next Top Model (my guilty pleasure), The Biggest Loser, The Voice and Survivor. Other shows I watch are The Originals, Outlander, The Vampire Diaries, Once Upon a Time, and Two Broke Girls. And of course Downton Abbey!

I haven't seen it talked about a lot, but we discovered The Goldbergs last year (I think it's on ABC?). It's a family sitcom, and it reminds me a lot of some of the shows I grew up watching (Home Improvement, etc.)

I don't watch television much, except for shows like Dateline, 48 hours, Snapped, on ID (which I guess is reality). I also like the Hallmark Movie Channel. The only time I watch SciFi is when the Twilight Zone is on.

I have been an ANTM super fan for the past 21 cycles!! Every season there is an increasing focus on the drama is the house and modeling is becoming more and more secondary to the show. This one is THE WORST. I'm not sure I'll make it through the whole season.

Yeah, such a shame... I don't know WHY they feel the need to focus on the drama and not on the modeling. Bleh!

Anyways, Australia's Next Top Model is on Hulu and I've only seen season 1, but it's definitely way better.

I watch House Hunters...or at least it's on when I'm grading. I also watch Flea Market Flip when new episodes show up on my DVR. There's a few more that are recorded and I watch them when I need to sit still for a while.

Be warned with Stalker, it is incredibly graphic to the point where it borders on torture porn.

Did you ever see the show The Following? It's made by the same person, and it is apparently much much much bloodier than The Following.

The UK is exactly the same

Reality TV is cheap to make and because it gets good ratings they can sell the advertising space. The huge number of channels now means that there are too many programmes chasing too few advertisers and so revenues are down thus the vast majority of channels either show cheap rubbish programmes (sadly many of them from the USA) or re-runs of old programmes. Having said that the re-runs are often the best programmes on the telly!
I don't watch much live TV these days. I look through the schedules and record on my digibox anything that takes my fancy and then watch it at times convenient to me. This comes with the advantage that if the programme is not from the BBC (no ads) then I can FF through the breaks.

One of the channels has just begun showing STTNG again so I have a series link on that!

I'll have to check out Australia's version. I don't know if I can make it through the rest of this season...and that's a shame because I actually like the show (not as much as I did when Niles Barker was on there though).

Scroll down to the part about Stalker to read about it. It sounds like the most offensive pilot of the fall season, but probably not the worst (One of the comedies will probably take that honor)
