A gorgeous black lab (not sure if it is full) puppy showed up in our yard Sunday afternoon. We tried to ignore it, but the temps were over 100 degrees and he was skinny and tired.

So, we still have him, but we canNOT keep him.

We've done the following to either reunite him with his owner or to find a new home for him:
Put up posters with his photos
Ran an ad in the classifieds
    Shared on Facebook
Shared on a local online forum
Have a 5 day tv ad running
All of the fosters and shelters in the area say they are full.

    What else can we do?

He is a GREAT dog, but he is disrupting the lives of the 2 dogs we already have (he plays well with them, but their routine is all messed up because he is in their yard ... our 2 dogs [black labs, btw] are indoor dogs and they do NOT like having a dog in their back yard).

    Any takers here? :)

Have you visited homeagain.com? I don't know if that is the online forum you mentioned or not but it is often a good resource for lost pets in your area.

Have you taken him to the vet to see if he has a chip? I hope you are able to find his home :(

Where do you live? If I could persuade my husband, we would take him. We have a dog like that, too. We still have him three years later. We did NOT want another dog, but couldn't stand to take him to the pound.

We took a stray to the vent and thanks to the microchip he was home sweet home in a just a few hours. That this dog you currently have was skinny worries me, though. I would speak to a shelter again...they seem to really network, so ask if they can communicate with shelters in the region to see if they can accept him.

Thank you for helping him. It sounds like you've done everything you can to locate his owners. You may have to broaden your circle of fosters and shelters. Perhaps a no-kill shelter will agree to take him if he comes with a donation. You actually might be able to raise a donation from friends, neighbors and family.

I told the shelters I would make a donation ... no go.

Our tv ad includes: will pay for shots and neutering

IN - I called the vets and asked if anyone had reported a missing dog, but didn't think of the microchip. We have our dogs chipped and they have a tag on their collars with info. This little guy didn't have a collar and no sign of ever having worn one. He was flea-bitten and so skinny, I guess we just assumed he didn't come from a home that would have chipped him. Probably a bad assumption.

Also, with all the terrible weather that has occurred in your area, do you think that maybe he lost his home and people and that is why he is so skinny and uncared for :( ??

Maybe. The worst of the tornado was 30 miles away. There was a GREAT (inspiring) effort to get pets back to owners or into new families.

KU, have you checked into animal rescue organizations? If you need help, I can help you.

No, I'd like to. I've only found shelter and foster options around here. What do I need to do?

You can try craigs list and freecycle if your other options run out.

I'm guessing you are from Kansas. If you are, here is a list of rescue organizations. I'd call the no-kill ones first.

I would be very cautious about Craig's list or freecycle. I have heard both have problems with people who are using the animals for fighting or selling the dogs to experimental places. It is usually recommended that you ask for a certain amount of money on the internet to reassure that the animal can be cared for at the new home.

Once you're sure it hasn't been chipped, you could maybe put an ad on Craigslist or Petfinder, for an adoption, not necessarily just to find the owner.

    UPDATE!

We had the dog for 2 weeks. Finally, someone responded to our TV ad. When he called he sounded like he was disappointed that the puppy wasn't younger. But, he brought his family over to meet the dog (who we had started calling Jasper).

Jasper put on a SHOW. Gave kisses to the little girl. Sat on command. Rolled over for belly scratches.

Within a few seconds I knew the man was hooked. !!

Jasper left with his new family and took with him: a bag of dog food, a new collar, a new leash, and a stuffed duck.

The following day, I scheduled with a vet and paid for his first round of shots and to be neutered. The family scheduled an appt for Jasper! :)

    So, a happy ending!

You and your DH are such great people to go to such extremes with your time and money to help out this doggie!!!

    Glad for the happy ending.

We are currently fostering a stray lab mix, and tonight infield a kitten while I was working in my garden.

Our dig is sleeping in the den. Stray dog is sleeping in our dog's house, and the little kitten is curled up on a chair on the porch.

applause! :) I'm so glad to hear. I have four pets. Three were originally strays that I adopted from shelters and the fourth was a stray when she found us. I tried to find her a home and called every no-kill shelter and no one could take her. Its a lot of work and you did a fabulous effort finding Jasper a new home.

If only these pets could talk...they must have some crazy adventures before finding us!

Very happy for you and Jasper. I admire people who help animals. I'm one of those people. Does that mean I admire myself???!!!!
Seriously, you did such a good deed.
My wonderful Redman (cat) was a stray. I love him deeply.

That is SO fantastic -- I wish we could adopt every homeless animal we find! My dream is to own a home with some land so that we can at least take in a few fosters at a time.

You are *fabulous* for doing all that you did!! :D
