What do you wish you had learned in HS?

    Hey, Everyone!
    With your input and the input of some others, we came up with this list (it is still in the planning phase):

    OUTCOME #1: READING
    Topics will include:
    Understanding taxes
    Understanding health insurance
    Practical applications of legal system
    Identity protection
    Credit and credit score
    Career choice
    Literature - biography/autobiography
    Contracts - loans, rental
    Personal improvement topics - e.g. how to avoid procrastination, how to be organized, how to work in groups
    Healthy relationships
    How to deal with failure

    OUTCOME #2: WRITING
    Assignments will include:
    Resume
    Cover letter
    Career research paper
    Volunteering research paper
    Life change essay
    Email responses - to boss, to stranger
    Complaint letter
    Thank you notes

    OUTCOME #3: SPEAKING
    Opportunities will include:
    Mock job interview
    Questions to ask after an interview
    Phone etiquette - practice phone calls
    Resolving disputes with customer service
    Talking to police officers when pulled over
    Presentation of Volunteering Experience
    Daily skills demonstrations, for example:
    How to change your oil
    How to change a tire
    How to tie a necktie
    How to sew on a button
    Requesting a letter of recommendation

    OUTCOME #4: LISTENING
    Opportunities will include:
    Guest speakers
    Police Officer - Law enforcement
    Lawyer - turning 18 responsibilities
    Age 20-something person - young adulthood issues
    Age 30-something person - marriage and parenting
    Age 40-something person - life after the kids have moved away
    Age 50-something person - preparing for retirement
    Age 60-something person - retirement
    Age 70-something person - life fulfillment
    Student demonstrations of daily skills

    Wow looks like a good list. I know the button sewing is great... What about darning socks... I know sounds silly, but for some reason toe part goes first.

    Yes, there will end up being about 20 daily skills demonstrated, one by each student.

    This morning while showering, I thought we need to add something about 401K and 403b, IRAs, etc.

    Oh good one... yes future financial planning... what about investments like either stock or money markets...although reading your post again maybe that's the etc....
