Okay, so I am usually Christmas Eve Queen- I make Shrimp Scampi, Oysters, Lobster, Calamari, etc. This year, I not only have to do Christmas eve, but Christmas Dinner. Does anyone have any good recipes they would be willing to share?:help:
Rock salt encrusted prime rib, horseradish sauce, potatoes romanoff, green salad, garlic bread, and tomato aspic (yuck, but others like it). How many are you serving?
You're doing Christmas Eve too, so it's got to be something pretty labor-minimal or you'll be exhausted. We always have turkey. (My sister does Thanksgiving, so this is my one big one of the year.) It's incredibly easy; pop it in the oven, and a few hours later you take it out. Stuffing is easy, and some gravy and cranberry sauce and you're done. How about a turkey,a tray or two of lasagna (you can make it ahead of time, and re-heat as the turkey sits)
Thanks Alice! Lasagna is always a must, as well as Spaghetti di Marco. I might make both Ham and Turkey, stuffed with polenta and some cheese and meats plate as a appetizer.
Christmas Day--turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, a couple of vegetables, salad, homemade (by my mom) buns, chocolate mousse and Christmas cookies for dessert.
It has varied over the years, but earlier this fall at a retirement party for my brother-in-law I was talking with a family member about crockpot recipes and she suggested a crockpot Christmas! Christmas has been at our house the last several years, so this was a great suggestion for me. We will have about 6 different crockpot dishes (I am doing beef stew) and I will provide the veggies and desserts. Hope it goes well!
We alternate depending on how we feel or what kind of sales we can get. meal option #1 : deep fried turkey, stuffing, mashed taters, green beans, (traditional Thanksgiving fare) Option 2: Prime rib, scalloped taters, lima beans in a rue Option 3: baked ham, scalloped taters Although this year, we are going to my husband's aunt's house. I'm sure we'll have kimchee, bulgogi, kalbi and some other traditional Korean foods!
We usually have a ham with some kind of potatoes like potatoes au gratin or yams. My mom always adds a pasta dish as well. My whole family loves appetizers so I usually bring a few of those like an antipasto or cheese tray.
Thanks for the responses everyone! We just moved into a new, big house, so I want to make this perfect! If anyone needs some Italian recipes, I'm your girl! Any good ham recipes?
Christmas Eve is Prime rib and crab cakes, with a pot luck of sides. Christmas dinner, we have finally convinced my mom to just do soup and sandwiches this year. We are having 4 homemade soups and a meat tray with different breads. We also have a big brunch too, and with the Eve dinner, by the time we get to Christmas evening, no one wants the big meal, and my mom spends the whole day in the kitchen making it, and it always stresses her out. We decided this year, we are playing games and watching movies and just enjoying a casual dinner.
My MIL bastes her ham with 7UP soda (regular not diet) and adds pineapple rings. It comes out pretty good.
We do appetizers and munchies all day on Christmas Eve, and on Christmas day we usually have seafood. This year we're having trout and shrimp.
Yummy! I usually have Shrimp Scampi, Spicy Crab, Italian Shrimp and Rosemary Spiedini, Mussels cooked in white wine and bay leaf, Crab Ravioli, Catfish Tuscany, and my favorite Cioppino for Christmas Eve. Yum Yum Yum!
I'm 62. Salt and Butter are my favorite foods. I think I better take a day off from eating on Christmas Day. If I can, then Christmas will be better. On the 26th I will feel like it was a better Christmas.
We are eating very light tonight so we can indulge for the next 2 nights. Then, it's back to eating light until New Years eve when I prepare a munchie fest! That's my favorite out of all the holiday meals.
New Years Eve, it is all about black eyed peas, and ham. Also, my mother in law comes and makes homemade pizza. Everything homemade, including the mozzarella, homemade sauce... Love it!
We're having lamb...it's marinating right now in a pesto of olive oil, rosemary, and garlic. I'm making risotto, rolls, a green salad, and pumpkin pie for dessert. We've gone back and forth about dinner this year and this seemed like a good compromise between somewhat fancy and not to time consuming. Tomorrow night we're having Mexican and New Year's Day is always black eyed peas and cornbread.
Oh, I LOVE lamb with mint jelly!!! Unfortunately, I'm the only one in the house who likes it, so I only have it at restaurants.
Gosh, I wish I could come to your house. I love seafood, but no one else eats it in my house. I stick a ham in the oven, covered and let it cook. We will have mashed potatos and gravy, squash, green salad, cauliflower and pies. I get to cook every holiday. I keep trying to get one of my DD to do it.
Just to update-- 35 now coming CE! We are all seafood lovers in my house! Maybe it is an Italian thing, I do not know. The men usually watch Football, while us women cook-- my 15 yr old DD is a good help, and I may even enlist the help of my 6 yr old DD. I love the holidays!
I could be happy w/ pizza or Chinese food for Christmas! But I think this yr, we're having turkey & spinach lasagna, an organic chicken that we'll roast & probably a nice lettuce salad or some other veggie like eggplant.
I have an Italian last name, but I'm Irish. I LOVE the whole Italian 7 fishes thing, but it simply would not fly in my family.
My sister does eve...she goes with a theme each year. We've done Italian, Mexican, English...tomorrows dinner is German...sauerbraten, various wursts, potato pancakes my parents do Christmas day. More traditional...usually a ham, lasagne...
Being Polish we have the usual kielbasy, saurkraut, homemade pierogis, and also one disk of ziti and meatballs for those not fans of the Polish fare! LOL!
