This is my first year in 1st. I'm moving from kindergarten. I want to have something at their seat for them to work on when they come in while everyone gets settled. I have an reader that I think I might use. It is called Where am I? It has different supplies on each page with a sentence (I see a backpack, I see a crayon, etc.). The last page says I am at school. The sentence are dotted for them to trace, and there is a picture to color on each page. I was going to have them trace the sentences and color the pictures when they finish their breakfast. After they are finished, I will show the pages on the Promethean Board and we will choral read them together. What do you think?

What a neat 1st day activity!
If I was teaching the same grade, I would definitely use your idea.
Enjoy your school year, and never let them see you sweat!:D

That sounds like a great starter activity =)

You want something that your students can complete independently while you're greeting parents and figuring out dismissal stuff.

Great idea! Is this a book you've made? Would you mind sharing? I've been looking for something for the first day as well, something simple but not just "busy work". I like that it's simple independent work, then you follow thru with time taken to read it together. As it's read, could also have children point out the items in the room.

It is from a back to school packet from LoveTwoTeach. I guess it's ok to post it since she has a link to the packet on her blog. Here it is:

Let me know if that doesn't work, and I will post the blog site. :)

I'd maybe include a blank line underneath the dotted line tracing for kids to try and write some of the words on their own.:thumb:
