What do you do after a bad day of teaching?

Morning was a-okay. Due to the cold temperatures, we had indoor recess at lunchtime. After that, everything was just awful. Lunch seemed to have ended with these bad energy I couldn't get out of the classroom. My bully-type students were calling anybody and everybody names, even when removed from the rest of the class it continued (and apparently continued for two of them in buddy classrooms). Kids would not stop talking (or whispering when things were supposed to be quiet). My Distractables were flopping on the floor, kicking chairs, pouting in the corner, throwing paper, running up and down one side of the classroom. One was literally bouncing off the walls (put himself in a corner between the iPad cart and just bounced in a triangular formation off the surfaces.)

I lined them up, I drilled routines, I reviewed expectations. We modeled, we practiced, we took periods of silence. We did yoga as soon as they seemed to settle, but yoga set them off again.

What's semi-amusing is my next-door-neighbor-former-retired-colleague-rehired-as-behavior-coach was in there for an hour--having been requested to observe one student. I felt half-like an idiot for not having my class under control, half-perfectly fine because I was sure trying.

Anywho, I'm beat. I'm hoping my girls' colds are worse so I have an excuse not to come in.

What are ways to recover and get back on track?

Wine is my "go-to". With that off the table--chocolate, curling up with a good book, mindless TV, dinner with friends.

I tutor the two children of the owners of a local Chinese restaurant - in the back booth while dinner is going on. It's pretty funny and the smells are enticing.

I blast some metal on the drive home (hence my name) and then do some lifting when I get home and that usually helps.

I, too, believe in all the sleep I can squeeze into my schedule. Gives me time to let down and relax - literally.

That's important anyway! If I don't get enough sleep I'm not giving my students the version of myself they need.

I go home, lie down, get it out of my system, meditate, then fix supper. Creative salads would definitely be on the menu.

I go to the gym or read. Netflix is good too. Just some quiet activity usually helps.

I'll let you know tonight when I get home! Today I found myself yelling in the hallway. I am not a yeller, usually a raised voice at a particular child will be enough to get the attention of the entire class. But the last two days have extremely difficult. I have many who have returned from being sick and I think that they have forgotten that school is the place to behave. This morning first thing a child broke another child's back pack. Then another teacher brought me a water bottle that a child had ice cold water in. She was dumping on other kids heads. I have one kid who I swear is on speed for the last two weeks because he just can't sit still. ( before the last two weeks he was my slow motion kid) I have a new one that is very bright and intelligent but has now taken over the sloth position. Oh and my kid with IEP well mom keeps messing, I mean adjusting his meds to suit her needs. Ok rant over sorry!!!!! I feel the need for some mindless binge watching TV.

When I have a bad day I deliberately don’t think about the events that have occurred in the evening. If I let it replay it over and over then I will have no opportunity to decompress. So I watch TV shows I enjoy and then straight to bed to end the bad day as early as possible and start afresh the next day. I find I have a more rational perspective the next morning and I don’t go into class all angry and worked up at their bad behaviour the previous day. But I will address the behaviour and do the usual reiterate behaviour expectations etc.

Chat to your behaviour coach, he or she may have seen it different to you. Teachers never give themselves a break and we are often so harsh on ourselves.

Write down in my daily notes journal what made the day tough. 5 minutes spent externalizing it after class saves a few hours of stress for the rest of the evening.

On a nice day a short walk. Other days 5 minutes of relaxing with some calm breathing and changing my focus from what is bothering me.

Going for a run is a great stress reliever for me. Yesterday evening I went grocery shopping after school and came home with a chocolate fudge cake. 2 pieces later, I felt like a new person.
