Hi, I am thinking about re-vamping my classroom jobs for next year. Some of mine worked this year, and others didn't. Honestly, I think I had too many- and they stopped being "fun". This year I only want to have around 8. I am having a small class this year, so it will pretty much mean the kids will have a job every other week. So far I have thought of: -Line Leader -End Line Leader -Bathroom monitors -Technology person (in charge of the projector remote, screen, and classroom computers being turned on and off) -Desk & Locker patrol (watch the kids at the lockers & make sure desks are clean) -Paper People (collect, pass out, and/or organize papers) -Office Person What do you have in your class?
I have these helpers you have listed. A fellow teacher mentioned another helper she was thinking about using next year. She called it a substitute. This person was in charge of collecting papers and making notes for absent students. I also have a pencil sharpener. This is a favorite job amongst my students. They sharpen other students' pencils for the day and make sure the pencil line stays quiet each morning while I am collecting papers and taking attendance.
I had two librarians each week who straightened up. pets chairs-took down/put up all chairs at reading table and for absent students board eraser office helper-took things to office; put mail in mailboxes; put a bright red "absent" folder on the desks of students who were absent so that items passed out could be put inside. light saver-end of line; turned off the lights gardener-watered plants M and Th and the usual
I decided to really streamline this year and went down to three jobs: messenger, morning helper and afternoon helper. It worked out very well and the kids seemed happy, also.
I have most of the same jobs- I also assign someone to pass out lunch tickets. I know some teachers who assign someone to be a "helper" (I'm not really sure what they call them), but someone who is responsible for helping out a sub when they come in...and someone can have the job for a month at a time, since they don't do the job everyday. That way the subs don't have all the kids going "that's not the way our teacher does it!"...and just one person helps them out with routine, etc.
I tried having a sub this year, it really didn't work out. 99% of the time, the sub forgot to do that person's job, or the person couldn't do the job (ex: the sub was a boy & the girls rr monitor was absent). Thought about having a pencil person, and having them sharpen pencils also at the end of the day while we are getting ready to get home. Good idea having them keep the pencil line quiet! I have also had sweepers (they sweep the room at the end of the day), and a librarian (who not only kept the classroom library tidy, they also took books to the school library). I need to do a better job next year of keeping them accountable for their jobs!
I have borrowed some ideas from a friend of mine to start my classroom jobs. I have decided that I am not going to do anything that the kids are capable of taking care of. I also want to give my jobs more "adult" titles, and had a bit of fun with this. I will have an Administrative Assistant, who takes care of handed in homework each morning, Distributors, who pass out papers, supplies, books, etcetera, Collections Managers, collects papers, etcetera, Secretary, answers phone and gives messages appropriately. I also have a Temp Agency, where I will have two kids that fill in for absent students. Then, of course, I'll have unemployment...with upwards of 30 kids, it would be way too tough to have that many jobs.
I also need to cut down on the number of jobs in my classroom. Last year, I returned to work at a summer camp since my husband was deployed for the summer. I asked some of the other counselors (who had been my campers when I worked there years ago!) what they remembered from their teachers...one told me that her favorite thing was that her teacher passed out "class money" and "auctioned" off class jobs (as well as other prizes). I thought that sounded like fun! Miss McCollum, I gave my class "adult" sounding titles this year and it didn't take long for them to change them back. But they'll probably stick better with your 5th graders than my 1st/2nd!
I love the idea of giving them adult titles. I also love the unemployment one. Here are the ones I came up with. But I will have to go through and rename some of them. Class Reporter- will write up weekly reports on what has happened in room 19 $45 Extra Hands- pass out papers, staple, clean board, monitors pencil sharpener $40 Custodian- helps library clean up library, checks around classroom for trash, gives fines to students who leaves a large mess $40 Paper passer/collector- passes out papers to team leaders $40 Homework Checker- Collects homework, puts them into order by student number, marks what numbers are missing $35 Banker- Pays employed students for their work. Collects rent from all students. $30 Class Librarian-puts books away, makes sure books are organized and dusts the shelves. $30 Messenger- takes attendance to office, runs errands for the teacher when necessary. $25 Cashier- runs student store from 8:00-8:13 every Friday. $25 Homework Agenda Monitor- stamps homework agenda’s that have parent signature on them. $20 Economist- studies student’s shopping behavior. Fills out a worksheet on what kind of items students are purchasing. $20 Class Lieutenant- makes sure students are following rules during class and recess $15 Operator- answers classroom phone $12 Substitute- takes care of a job if a student is absent $10/job Caboose- Turns off the light and closes the door when everyone leaves the classroom $10 Equipment Manager- balls must be checked out through the manager $8/job
Weekly jobs: Lunch monitor - helps out with anything concerning lunch Hallway monitor - Clean hallways, help students Supply monitor - papers, scissors, glue and pens sharp and in place. Cleaning monitor - cleans floors and make sure other kids clean up after themselves, trash Classroom helper - hands out and collects papers etc. sink/window/board monitor - clean sink area, water plants, clean board Leader - supervises the other jobs, takes notes and papers for absent students and helps subs with routines etc.

One I've noticed no one's listed- When I was in 2nd grade, one of the class jobs was Janitor- that student had to wipe up the floor of the bathroom (attatched to the room) if anyone *missed* ewwwww!
Great names- I may tweak mine next year. I have Floor Patrol, Mail Carrier (we have a classroom mailbox), Librarian. My Star Student is a sub and fills in for absent students. All my kiddos have jobs and they like that.
All the jobs makes my head swim. I am making my life super simple this next year and I am going to have 2 teacher's aides...period...a girl and a boy. They will do what needs to be done that week...line leader, table washer, pets, library, pass out papers, etc...you name they will do it. I think it will make everything a lot more simpler.
Wow! Lots of jobs! I made it a little simpler for myself by having only 2 helpers each week. The helpers were nominated by the class at the beginning of the week. It worked really well with my 4th graders.
I'm going to need to add Mayor to my list. I also have a lot of jobs, but in the end I think it will be easier for me...because then I am pawning off that responsibility...and teaching them important social skills.
I used the same jobs last year and The kids loved it. I had 22 students last year so I had one more job (Job Inspector) who made sure everyone was doing their jobs. I teach fifth so, I didn't have a problem keeping up with the jobs - the students do it.
I have cafeteria helpers that wipe down our tables after lunch, plus a lot of the same jobs that are on here already.
I know this sounds odd, but I had one helper per week who did everything "extra" like passing out/collecting papers, errands, etc. It worked out well for me. Students were selected by using my class roster (ABC order). Once I went through the whole roster, we just started over again. It's worked for me so far so I plan to continue.
Two jobs. Line leader and "everything else" person. If I need something I can call on them. Caboose-I like to have a student who holds the door for the class to pass through and then takes up the end of the line. This is actually an important task because it keeps straggling from happening. The line leader becomes the next caboose. I also think I am leaning towards lining up in specific order and asigning the two jobs accordingly. That way I do not have to deal with issues like cutting and eventually everyone gets to be where they are comfortable in line.
I, too, have streamlined my helpers to being one boy and one girl. I have each child's name on a colorful cut-out and are hanging next to a sign that says "Mrs. ___'s Hoppy Helpers" (they're frogs, by the way!) They are hanging in alphabetical order and I switch every day. SO much simpler!
My jobs are Calendar Cop- assists me with calendar (eventually does on own) Meterologist - (aka weather person) checks weather Line Leader Caboose Pencil Technician - sharpens pencils Technology Technician - gets computers ready, turns lights on/off, overhead on/off Administrative Assistant - if I have any special errands for student to run Classroom Librarian - organizes books (puts them in correct bin according to stickers) Scribe - Fills in blanks in morning message Lunchcount Attendant - Counts lunch and hands out lunch tickets Marker boards - erases marker boards (students love this job!?!) Mail person - hands out papers Paper Collector - collects papers, manipulatives, etc Floor Manager - checks floors to see if anyone needs to pick up trash Flag Leader - starts our Pledge Substitute - fills in for anyone who is absent "On Vacation" anyone who does not have a job for the day That is all I can think of now but I may add a few - I like Hand Sanitizer and I am adding a girl/boy bathroom monitor Because I have so many jobs I change them daily
This is my list that I wrote down from last year. I'm not using ALL of these, a few teachers and I were just compiling possible jobs. I'm going to be adding jobs in from this thread! 1) Line Leader x1 Leads the class to their location when in line. 2) Door Holder x3 Holds any doors that the class comes across. 3) Attendance x2 Responsible for bringing the attendance folder down on time (and making sure that the teacher does it!) 4) Supply Manager x1 Checks the classroom supplies at the end of the day. Duties include sharpening pencils, making sure supplies are in their proper places and keeping the area clean. 5) Librarian x1 Responsible for the classroom library. Duties include making sure that the bookshelves are clean and orderly and making sure to bring any library books placed in the Library Bin back to the library. 6) Paper Manager x1 Passes out any worksheets for the teacher. Also is responsible to check the class paper supply and re-stock if needed. 7) Center Manager x1 Makes sure that all needed materials are available for students during Centers time. Keeps the area clean and orderly. 8) Mail Manager x1 Responsible for placing any notices in students mailboxes. Will have a bin where the teacher places notices to be distributed. 9) Line Manager x1 Responsible for watching the lines. Can give warnings to students who are not following line rules. 10) Teacher Assistant x1 Does whatever the teacher needs them to do, but NO GRADING! This could include separating Scholastic catalogs, cutting something out, etc. Fills in for any student jobs if the student is absent. Makes sure all daily change items are done (i.e. “Today is…” signs, “The weather today is…”, etc.)

my classroom jobs are divided by pod (I have coop. group seating) Pod jobs will be kept for 1 week (*)Supply Manager-It is your job to collect and pass in/out all supplies and COUGARS (*)Secretary-If there is an absence in your pod you will take notes in the daily journal on what we did in class, fill out an absence report and collect any papers handed out in class for your pod mate. (*)Paper Pusher-You will collect and pass in/out all papers. You are also responsible for putting in numerical order. (*)Line Leader-If your pod is called first, you are the class line leader (all other pods will line up behind their respective line leader in the master line) (*)Substitute-You will take over the duties of any pod mate if they are absent or unable to fulfill their duties.
I like to have one job for each student in my classroom. They keep their job for two weeks, then I switch it up. Since I teach first grade I introduce one job a day and give small groups the job to share so that everyone has a chance to test them out. I've found that if everyone in my class has something to do, our day goes much better. About 10 minutes before the end of each day we do end-of-day jobs. No one is allowed to leave until all jobs have been completed and everything is ready for the next day.
