I'm considering making a switch to first grade- here is the tentative schedule I'm thinking of (based on Paula Rogovin's "Research Workshop"):

    Research Workshop
    Share Time
    Writers Workshop
    Reading Workshop
    Math Workshop
    Lunch, Specials
Group Meeting (Songs, Poetry, News, Reflections)
    Center Time or Outdoor Time

What do your schedules look like? (I'm curious)

    Thanks
    Sarah

Uh, I would die for a schedule like that. I guess it comes along with teaching at a district that has a 4 day school week. Our schedule is jam packed. It goes a little something like this...

    7:45-8:00 Breakfast
8:00-9:00 Reading Centers and Reading Groups
    9:00-10:00 Full Group Reading
    10:00-10:15 Recess
    10:15-11:15 Math
    11:15-12:00 Lunch and Recess
12:00-12:15 Read aloud (or some kind of writing worksheet according to the other teachers, but I HATE all the worksheets!!!)
    12:15-12:45 Science/Social Studies
    12:45-1:30 Writer's Workshop
    1:30-2:00 Specials
2:00-2:50 Tiger Time (which consists of attempting to test students on DIBELS whilst also trying to keep everyone else quiet enough so you can hear the student you are testing).
2:55-3:00 Pack up and go home

    I have an easy schedule...
8:45-9:00 morning work (sometimes until 9:15 depending on the task) This includes morning message and some sort of activity.
9:00-9:20 Morning choice time (blocks, art, etc.)
    9:20-9:40 Morning meeting/calendar
    9:40-10:45 Reader's Workshop
    10:45-11:10 recess
    11:10-11:20 Snack and a story
    11:20-12:00 Writer's Workshop
    12:00-12:45 Lunch and Recess
    12:45-1:00 Read aloud
    1:00-1:35 Working w/ Words
    1:30-2:05 Specialist
    2:05-2:50 Math Workshop
    2:50-3:00 Choice Time/Clean up/Dismissal

If I want to do science or something different, like valentines cards... it's in place of math, writing, or reading. I don't get to much science, unfortunately.

    very interesting, thank you.

research workshop is the project approach, and inquiry approach.. which will typically carry over to other workshops during the day too, making the curriculum more integrated.

Read Paula Rogovin's book, titled "the Research Workshop." It's gold. Children decide on a topic of interest (ie people at work), children learn to ask questions and find answers to their questions through a variety of resources- books, poetry, interviews, field trips, role plays, family members, etc.. It's amazing the subjects her children delved into while on this year long study... they even studied child labor.

A TON of work for teachers, especially gathering resources, but the results are incredible. And being interested in the subject really motivates the children to learn.

Yeah, and I'm not entirely sure I like it. I thought "Oooh 4 days!" when I interviewed, and it's nice to have the 3 day weekends (except we do have 1 work Friday a month), I just don't like the cramming everything into 4 days and having NO time for fun unless I find a way to turn a lesson into fun, and even then it's still not always fun. :(
