It seems that many of us are doing appetizers tonight.

As I was unloading groceries from my trunk, my friend warned me not to bring anything tonight; she had it covered.

    Umm, too late.

(And she has no kids. I'm not sure she realizes just how much a 12 year old boy, especially one Brian's size, can eat it 3 hours.)

So I'm making ham and cheese spirals (I mentioned them this morning on the warm appetizer thread, and they sounded good)

Also the potato puffs I mentioned on the same thread. I still have some sweet potatoes to use up, maybe I'll try some sweet potato puffs as well.

I have frozen potato skins, buffalo wings, and I forget what else.

The kids will probably make some Rice Krispie Treats this afternoon, and maybe from cookies too.

I'll be ringing in New Year's with a cold that won't quit - so a quiet night with BF. I'm bring 7 layer Greek dip - seasoned cream cheese, hummus, cucumbers, tomatoes, kalamata olives, green onions, and feta. And, of course, the herring.

We're having shrimp scampi made with fresh Gulf Coast shrimp, and lots of little desserts. :) We may not ever have a white Christmas, but at least we have fresh seafood 12 months a year! LOL

It's just DH and my best friend, who is visiting from the midwest--we've got a pound of cooked shrimp and the fixings for bruschetta. DH is having stomach problems and can't eat anything heavy right now, nor can he drink, so it will be a sparkling apple cider toast (which will probably occur at 9 p.m., since it will be midnight in NYC.)

Ooo, I love smoked brisket! One of the best investments we've made here was a Big Green Egg.

Rockhubby is making a Venezuelan pot roast that we're taking to our friends' house. It is one of the best things I've ever eaten.

Spinach dip. Our hosts are making a taco dip and cold cuts. We are pooling together all of our leftover Christmas cookies. Easy peasy.

I tried the pickled herring last year, as my Pop used to eat it every year for luck. Blech - I don't think I can do it again. lol. We will eat pork and sauerkraut tomorrow though.

It's funny to see what different parts of the country eat on New Year's Day. We are supposed to eat ham, black eyed peas, and cabbage or greens. Of course, that all goes with rice and cornbread. For dessert, it's some kind of cake, usually pineapple.

One year my mom tried to cheat and serve king cake before it was in season. Bad plan. We had a very unlucky seven days until Three King's Day, so we won't do that again.

We don't do anything special for tonight. We have always at least managed to stay up until midnight, but that's about it. As far as eats, I'm really enjoying my White Chocolate Wonderful peanut butter from Peanut Butter & Co. right now! :)

We are party poopers too. With an 11 year old and 13 year old, we just don't feel like going anywhere or being on the road.
I have a Pikes Peak roast in the oven with carrots and onions and am going to make gravy, biscuits, and mashed potatoes to go with it.

Along with the usual NYE stuff that people do, does anyone "put their money out"? I just learned about this today and I think I'll try it. It can't hurt!

I didn't make anything other than a late breakfast this morning.

Since we had a late breakfast, we skipped lunch and then went out for an early supper. The restaurant was incredibly slow, and everyone working seemed be trying to figure out what they were doing as they went. At least the food was fine.

DH will be asleep before 9:00.

    This is what someone said:

"The theory is the first thing in your house on New Year's should be money. What I do is, I put money on the table on my front porch the night before. Then in the morning or anytime after midnight, we open the front door, walk outside then we toss the money into the house before we walk back in. The tossing isn't required, but it's my way to make sure it goes in before we do".

I guess it's just a "luck" thing like people eating black eyed peas.

We always have "mini foods" on Christmas Eve after church service so I will be having the rest of those appetizers tonight. I also got some cheese and crackers. Crunchy snacks courtesy of a chip factory outlet visit yesterday:)
Tomorrow we'll watch PSU play with barbecue meatballs, little hot dogs and pork barbecue. No sauerkraut here even though it's a PA standard.

Last night I made Rotel dip wit sausage, meatballs, and 7 layer bars. DH set out the chips, dips, crackers and cheese. We watched a 3D movie and waited for midnight then I had to pick up DS2 from a party.

I'm making ham and beans in the crock pot for dinner. While its cooking, I'm going to take down the Christmas decor while watching a Dr Who marathon. Its storming so I hope the power stays on.

We've taken my mom's family's traditions and my dad's family's traditions and created our own... It wasn't until I was in college that I realized that we are probably the only people that actually eat dinner at midnight on New years....

The night before we eat cookies, veggies, cheeseball & crackers, and assorted other junk food, while playing Canasta. At 11:30 we set the table and put a bowl of hot dogs, pork and sauerkraut on the table with a penny under it. We watch the ball drop on tv, while holding a penny, nickle, dime, and quarter (a set also has to go on the windowsill) then go into the kitchen and eat the hot dogs. My mom gets up early the next day and makes a huge breakfast for everyone and we watch the Tournament of Roses Parade.

Today, we will do it all over again only during the day when my grandparents come over.

Last night was the typical party food - chips & dip, some leftover Christmas baking, pop, alchohol, etc.

We just finished up our annual New Year's Day waffle brunch. I'm on a bit of a sugar rush right now... yummm....
